Guitar amps?

I know there are some musicians here, so I'm wondering what you'd recommend in the way of electric guitar amps. I am going to get my 16 year old daughter one for her birthday. It needs to be VERY limited power-wise. She has just begun to play the guitar her brother gave her a couple of years ago, so I don't know how long this will last.

Any suggestions?

I've played guitar for about 20 years now. Both for fun and professionally in a band. Could fill pages on amps...

There are so many choices now, especially for young players on a budget. Try a small Fender combo amp, can't go wrong. No point splashing out big bucks if the hobby won't last. If she likes it, she'll push for a new amp when she is ready for it.

I still have my first amp, a 10-watt Peavey Decade. Great little amp.

Good luck!

I just looked at the amp she's been using. t's a friend's and it's a 38 watt Fender. It's plenty loud enough. 10 watts sounds even better!! Thanks, Zeus.

Pretty much sums it up.

Here's a place to start the hunt: www.musiciansfriend.com

My daughter plays electric bass (and is sticking with it). I bought her a little Peavey gig amp that resides in her bedroom so that she can practice.

It helps that Dad is a musician, so I don't worry too much about investing in gear. When she plays out, I let her use my rig.

It's going to be interesting to see if the "Guitar Hero" generation can evolve from playing guitar controllers with "buttons" instead of "frets"...

Peaveys are really well built, and last forever. Their transtube technology is not bad. I still have a 10 watt peavey I use almost daily. $20 on ebay.

Compare the situation to a car: a friend has a 300d turbo, you own an 83 tercel ez or no car at all, your wife wants to get you a car you want and she knows you want a turbo but in fear of you going to fast in a turbo she settles on a 240d instead.. Hehe after this failed analogy I mean to say at least get your daughter a 38 watt, good brands not mentioned are crate and orange.

If you tried to take all the legendary guitar tones over the years, and some of the best effects - from genuine spring reverb to ribbon-tape echo - and distilled them all into a tiny red box...well, that's how it sounds.

Handy for those situations where you need a lot of different sounds at hand. Like rehearsals or a cover band in an already loud bar with a crappy PA system...

I used to rock a halfway decent Crate with two 10" speakers. Sounded good with some effects plugged in. All this talk is bringing back too many memories.

Now, see that's dangerous information. Since coming back to six strings with an OM Martin, I've always been able to talk myself out of a used Strat or SG by contemplating the costs of amps, effect boxes and all the other e-lectric doo dads. I may have to investigate further.

Back in about 1980 or so, I bought a Crate CR-10 amp. At the time it was the smallest amp Crate made. It had a perfect sound and just rockin' distortion. I even used it on stage - just put a mic on it and ran it through the PA. I'd still have it if it wasn't burned up in a fire about 14 years ago...

This is probably the equivalent amp today:

You should just go to a Music Go Round if there's one near you. Lots of stuff there.
