Probably to keep the car on the road, and air flowing through oil, coolers brakes and everything else that needs to be cooled.

Downforce isn't free.

Its to create downforce, an F1 car can drive upside down over what 150?
Thats an adjustable number though, downforce on any race car is something that is dialed in or out.

Are those numbers total drag or coefficient of drag?

That is surprising. On the other hand, the drag coefficient is a measure of the drag per unit of surface area at any given speed and the F1 car has much less surface area than the Hummer. I am still surprised that the Hummer does so well compared to F1, especially since the coefficient is multiplied by the surface area and the square of the velocity. So, if you double the speed of a car, its drag goes up by a factor of 4. How fast do F1 cars go during a race? A lot faster than a Hummer, I'm sure.

Well, they balance the drag against downforce. Some cars have more down force (if they have more power, typically) and some have less drag for higher straight line speeds.
In the much simpler days at the Indianapolis 500 they used to allow more boost for the stock block builck v6s. they had so much power that in qualifying trim they could run much bigger wings than the cosworth powered cars. Hence a less skilled driver could put one on the pole....with all that wing you just had to keep turning left. The buicks never won the race though and I think maybe it was because they used more fuel in the end. The engines were heavier too and so they probably needed more tire changes. The qualifying record there is held by Ari Luyendyke running a buick. It was runon Sunday after he was disqualified for being 7 pounds light on Saturday. His record speed was over 237 mph for one lap and a high 236 average for four laps. Scott Brayton sat on the pole with another Buick and in a really freaky accident, died in practice a week later. It was 1996. Ari finished the race in seventh in 1995 in another Buick powered car. It was bright yellow with orange stripes....a Menard sponsered car. It sounded completely different than the cosworths and ilmores...they went by sounding something like killer bees and it was low and throaty sounding. It clearly ran a much taller gear....and the car sounded sortof incongruous with the engine almost sounding like it was idling as it went through the north end of the track where I was sitting in turn four. Jaques villenueve won in 1995 after Scott Goodyear was DQed in a bizzare incident involving passing the pace car on a restart. Actually Villeneuve had been penalized earlier in the race for the same thing and had made up 2 laps afterwards. The officiating at the speedway has gotten pretty goofy from time to time and this is a good example of something that should not have happened. The rules covering both of the infractions were difficult to understand and sometimes ignored and it was easy to understand how the drivers in the heat of battle got confused. But in the end Villeneuve deserved the win because he was fast all day and drove a good clean race. He left for F1 the next year and won the f1 title in his second year. I like him very much. He is a fast smart driver who always says exactly what is on his mind. I was tickled when he ran some nascar races late last year and early this year, but he did not get good sponsorship and pulled out early this year. After driving Indy cars and F1 the nascar race cars must have felt like UPS delivery trucks! Tom W
