Bourbon v Whiskey

Is there a big difference in taste between bourbon and whiskey? My grandparents are here visiting for a while. My granddad wanted bourbon so we went to the store and got him Jim Beam, he loved it. My granddad asked my mom to buy some more Jim Beam bourbon, so my mom rushed into the store and made a purchase. Only thing is when she got it home I looked at the bottle and it says Jack Daniels not Jim Beam and there's no mention of bourbon anywhere on the bottle. To my mom the Jim Beam bottle and the Jack Daniels bottle looked the same so she didnt even read the label. She thought it was strange that the price was a few dollars higher but just let it go. Is it likely my granddad will notice the difference?

I think there's a difference, but one is not better than the other. They are both made the same way from the same ingredients, but Jack is filtered through charcoal before aging and that disqualifies it, by law, as a Bourbon.

If he likes beam he will love jack, IMHO.

I like them both but jack is better.

To be correct, bourbon is a kind of whiskey, made primarily from corn. The name came from Bourbon County, Kentucky, where bourbon was first made.

I used to be a Jack Daniel's drinker until I discovered Maker's Mark.

It is the smoothest drinking bourbon I have ever had the pleasure of imbibing.

Yeah, it is a bit better than Jack, even.

I got a bottle once as a gift but am too cheap to spring for it myself.

And never be scared of unfamiliar name brands when ye see em - these are often the best. Evan Williams for example beats Jim Beam in my book. Look for "handmade" on the label too. This means ingredients are inspected and measured by hand instaed of machine. Virtually all of the best bourbons are hand made.

Excellent lesser known bourbons worth looking for:

Weller's
Very Old Barton
Rip van Winkle
Buffalo Trace
Knob Creek
Woodford Reserve

Another interesting tidbit of bourbon lore: Even during prohibition bourbon distilleries continued production at drastically reduced rate - sneakin through loophole in the law where county judges declared the stuff "medicinal" and available through doc's prescription. But was never shipped or sold outa the county where it was produced.

I would not fret about it.

Anybody who would complain about Jack probably would want egg in his beer too.

IMHO, Beam tastes like kerosene; Daniels is a lot smoother. But, I have a good friend that only drinks Beam whiskey because he thinks Daniels tastes like kerosene.

To each his own...

IIRC, Knob is 100 proof. Woodford is EXCELLENT sippin' whiskey and both are decent plonk.

But, don't take my word for it, we don't drink all that much whiskey at the farm.

Amen to that. I also went from Jack to Maker's - about fifteen years ago. Won't drink Jack now, but I never tire of the Maker's.

Randy, Ever thought about building a wall with all those bottles? Kinda like glass blocks.

I used to drink Jack 'til an old geezer turned me on to Ezra Brooks. Much smoother to me and less $$$.

Wellers makes me slap waitresses (or waiters) and dance on the table. Not pretty...

I'll give Ezra a spin next time I buy a jug (tomorrow). And, I hear you on the Wellers behavior (sounds like there's either a story or a song there somewhere)...I don't think I ever been quite as stupid as the one time I got blasted on Knob Creek. It makes me want to go drive the bulldozer around...in the dark!
