Mint Julep recipies?

It's that time of year. I make mine by boiling a handful of mint in a quart of water with a cup of sugar in it. I boil it down to a syrupy consistency, strain and cool it, and then stick it in the frig the day before I'm going to need it. Then I fill a julep cup with crushed ice (shaved is better, but who has a block of ice and an ice plane anymore?), a shot of good Kentucky bourbon, fill the rest of the way with the mint syrup, and stick a sprig of fresh mint into it.

How do you make yours?

Ahh I just go to this place called the Julep in town and throw down $7 and this girl makes it.

Juleps are a once and a while thing for me.

Having once lived in Louisville, I like to celebrate Derby Day with a julep. It only comes once a year . . .

I'd have to drink a lot of mint julips before believing that 20 babies trading paint on Churchill's funky surface is a serious horse race. Wake me up when it's Breeders Cup time ... of course by then, all these horses will be retired.

My recipe is very similar to yours but I skip the mint/sugar/water/boiling part.

I've never had a mint julep that I thought was good.

I like limes and tequila or olives and vodka.

Ahhhh, a purist! Well, me too the rest of the year. However, all that sugar makes a good julep something like a "forced induction" beverage. It goes straight to your brain!

There's horses there?

I always thought going to a horse race was a lot like going to an opera or something, more a place to socialize, to see and be seen, etc. than anything else.

Ah, come on, at least glue a few little plastic horses amid the flowers.

If I have enough bourbon I'll put just about anything up there.

I guess mint Juleps are not very popular. Maybe I'd better go back and search for the "Favorite Drinks" thread.

While I'm not a fan of the mint julep, I do like a mint mojito once in a while.
