That's interesting, but who actually uses Safari? I wonder why apple even bothers continuing to develop it.

A lot of Macs use it as their default browers.
I actually found the update and EULA part much more interesting. When then push Safari down to your windows box, they could sue you for violating the EULA. Ok they probably won't, but !!!!!!!

I tried Crapfari on my quad core AMD and quad core Intel, AMD machine has 4gb RAM and Intel has 8gb, both running XP x64. The claim that its the fastest can't be further from the truth. I wanted to compare it to my default browser that is Opera and guess what, Safari is not only slower than Opera but its slower than IE7 which beats it handsomely on rendering, page load and graphics so its good to see that the hype will slowly be broken.

He was prepared two weeks ahead, skip the first day of the challenge and make a simple web page that the user has to perform a specific task before it will work. Big wow, not impressive at all.
He only chose OSX because the MacBook Air was 10x better than the junk windows was running on. Quote:

Why would anybody flame or ban somebody over an opinion about a freaking computer?

Well Botnst, a while back I got into a back and forth with a couple of Apple Zealots. Their solution to PC ptoblems was "Buy a Mac", and that was it, no further reason, detail etc.
I don't knock Macs, and I think Apple could do a lot more with them, but they are keeping them unique to create more of a niche. I also don't knock Linux (Unix to me) with the exception of one thing. If 20+ years ago these Unix "????" (can't find the right word) had quit fighting with each other, gotten together, made all the Unix's interoperable and similiar, Mr. Bill would be flippin burgers. And I've worked on computers since the late 60s, used probalably every major OS, and a lot of one's most people never heard of. As well as have or do program in virtually every language.

The problem was the license for UNIX. AT&T was a regulated utility, and not in the business of selling software, a nice government-mandated position. They could use the software in their telco switches, and they could give it away, but they only did that to universities (e.g., Berkeley California). When they finally started licensing it, it was too late.
Another problem is what people expected out of a PC 20 years ago. They wanted hardware that was not capable of running UNIX or any multi-user operating system. Real-mode only and no memory management doesn't get you very far, but it is cheap (by comparison). |

Yeah, I've seen safari show up on my apple updater at least 5 times now. I'm like,,, "I don't even have safari, why would it be trying to "update" me?" Firefox rules.

True to a point Matt, but there were multiple flavors of Unix well entrenched by the time the PC appeared.
ATT, SCO, BSD, AIX, Xenix (Msfts version as I remember) just to name a few. Even if they'd have banded together into a good small/mid range server OS, Msft would have never become what they have. I am basically a Msft fan, I think what they did for computing (eventually, they messed up a few times early on) is why computing has become such an integral part of our lives. Basically in one word, Standardization, notice on Windows all the menus are similiar across all products (Msft or others), software from DOS still runs on Windows for the most part. Well Vista is messing with that, and I think it is a BIG mistake on Msfts part, I think this is Change for the sake of change. Not change to improve. Back when I worked with Unix, you often HAD to get new versions of programs (or recompile existing) to get them to run on the latest update. I will also defend many of their business practices. Although I don't necessarily think they were good for the industry. As a company it is always your goal to be number one in your area. Thats what they did, at times at the expense of some good products. Things like including IE with the OS (embedding NO, including yes). Try and buy a car w/o tires because you want to put something not offered by the manuf, or a stereo, or .... Same concept. But like all companies, Apple included, they get too big for their britches. And begin a downward spiral, I think Msft is at that crossroad. They are shooting randomly at many moving targets, without regard to wether it will make them or the industry better. I think they are driven by power and control, NOT evolution or improvement. I think they need to find a visionary leader, Gates fell out of that 10+ years ago. Ray Ozzie, aka Lotus Notes and now part of Msft could provide some of that spark. But it just might be too late. We'll know in another 5 or 10 years. They won't disappear, but like IBM they will just become another player in the market.

I use PC's at work but when I buy a computer out of my pocket, it's a Mac because it works as advertised out of the box with no configuration needed.
Yup, that's my solution to all problems: Buy a Mac. That isn't either a flame nor a call for execution nor banishment. It's an opinion of a non-computer pro who is forced to use the freaking things on a daily basis. I don't need to know nor do I want to know how the dang thing works. I want it to work according to my needs and goals. I'd prefr to just tell it what I want and have the stupid thing work without a freaking keyboard & rodent. My next computer will be the one that most nearly reaches that goal. Not some box label or cute commercial. |
