One time I lived in a small cabin that had a field mouse problem. I had a cheap ("Saturday night special!) .22 revolver and bought some long rifle shot cartridges and sat in the room after dark, lights-out. When I heard scurrying across the room (12 ft or so) I flipped-on the light and let fly with the .22. Keeryste! What a freaking noise! Damned-near deafening.

I can only imagine the sound of an up-close shotgun pointing down-range at me in a closed room or hallway. If not dead, you'd be scared *****less and deaf.

I think they make excellent home defence weapons because you don't have to worry about it going through the walls and killing someone. You can put 8 shells in the 590, they don't jam, and you can empty them really quick. The slightly larger spray pattern certianly doesn't hurt; every bit helps.

God willing the sound of you racking a shell will be enough to send the burgler running for the nearest window.

But before I ever considered keeping anything loaded by the bed I would take a bunch of classes and realy know how to handle it.

I didn't have a positive Jedi experience. I felt almost as if I was a victim of reverse discrimination. I'm glad it worked for you though.

Just realized you might be referring to my post, and it made me realize that I might have been vague. In no way is a shotgun a guaranteed hit, but if you've ever shot at targets from several yards with both a 9mm (or a .38 special) and 12ga buckshot, you know what I mean.

As for "scared off by it", have you ever been hit by a few pellets of shot? Individual pellets don't have much "stopping power", but they sure do make a guy pause for a moment and take stock of what he really wants to do.

We're not talking about a paid hitman or a religious fanatic out to kill infidels here; we're talking about crackheads who want to rob your house. Most of them aren't willing to die for it, because there's another house down the street where they won't get killed.

A shotgun is the best weapon for home defense, hands down. Ask gun dealers, cops, etc. There's nothing that compares to having that much "stopping power" at close range, and nothing (when talking about a break-barrel, at least) that's as quick to go from unloaded to "whoa!".

As you say though, there's no "best" or "worst" if the person holding the gun isn't prepared to be standing there, in that moment, holding a gun.

Anyway, I'm not out to bust on ya there aklim, just wanted to be sure I was clear about what I said earlier. I was writing in a hurry, and sometimes that makes the words not come out so clearly.
