I bought my parents the Dyson Animal for Christmas last year, as their other vacuum was no longer up to the task of keeping the floors clean....
I was amazed at the power the Dyson has, especially for being as light as it is! That is what sold me on it. My mom had problems carrying the old vacuum up the stairs, but the Dyson is considerably lighter, and has a easier time carrying it up the stairs... Swamp, I share your feelings on the Dyson! I was amazed at all the crap that it took out of the carpets in my house. We emptied the canister at least 3 or 4 times cleaning just the bottom floor of my house. Also- the Kirby guys came to my house to do a demonstration, about 2 weeks after getting the Dyson... They did their demonstration, and could not pick any dirt up after we vacuumed the area with our Dyson.... The guy was impressed with my Dyson, and even commented on how much better it was ergonomically, and how much lighter it is.... So yeah, thats my plug for this vacuum....

I'm glad to see that even a vacuum cleaner thread can yield some perverted posts. You guys haven't let me down.

Someone should package a Dyson vacuum in a Roomba chassis.

Panasonic
I had a house keeper leave me her Panasonic that had an issue with the power switch which annoyed her. I fixed the switch and used it for several yrs 'tll the bearings in the motor failed earlier this yr.
Went to get a new model and was shocked at the $400 price for the replacement. I found a dealer that sells several brands and caters to the house cleaning pros. He says this Panasonic is their choice. I was able to "test drive" several at his store and ended up spending the $400. This thing will suck Dirt Devils, Dysons and Kirbys inside out. |

I vote for the whole house unit.
I don't remember what brand we have in now (geesh I put it in) I think a VacuFlo though. But as I usuaully do I went one unit larger than recommended, not realizing the dealer was already pushing me one unit larger. Wow, we can run 2 outlets at once reasonably well, think of what it's like when we are just using the one. The exterior exhaust, Hepa, we don't need no stickin Hepa. Noise, virtually silent except when using the power head. Also nice when I redid the kitchen, put in one of those broom intakes under the counter. Nice for the little quick messes, and the exit cleanup between vacuumings.

In my home we have 3 long haired dogs & 2 cats. I run a stone yard, remnants of which come home with me daily.
The above facts are testiment to the volumes of dust & hair in my household We have a central vac system, which is wonderful on the hardwood floors on both levels of my house. The roughly monthly emptying routine never ceases to amaze me with the volumes of funk & hair. BUT One of my wifes passions is persian rugs. We have them everywhere, and no central vac attachment, even the electric powered beater heads, do a great job on rugs. For this, we purchased a Sebo upright vac, model X4. Very light weight, powerful, easy to change bags, & hepa rated filtration. They are pretty much $$, but well worth every penny. My wife seems to vacuum darn near every day. We have owned many brands over the years, but none have combined durabilty, superior suction, filtration, and ease of use into one package as well as the Sebo. She likes it so well, last year I bought her another one so we have one on each floor. I've owned the older one over 5 years, never one problem with it. The ultimate carpet tool in my opinion. We use a Kirby G5 here... The damn thing cost about $1,200 back in 1996. It uses bags, but sucks amazingly well, and traps EVERYTHING lol. I've had it destroy a pair of headphones in a split second.
Seems like I have to changed bags pretty often, but it is built incredibly well...I think it's easily the "Mercedes" of vacuum cleaners. ^_^ It is also self-propelled, and has a transmission lol. A lever on the back of the unit Drive and Neutral. Works as good today as it did in 1996...it also has attachments that allow it to shampoo carpet.

I have a DC14 animal and it's fantastic on bare floors, wall to wall carpets and heavier area rugs. However, on smaller, lighter runners, etc... its "epic fail" (to use one of those modern kids expressions).
The beater bar has a breakaway "cam" on it like a clutch on a cordless drill and the vacuum has such a strong suction that it pulls the rug up tight into the nozzle. This stops the beater bar dead and causes the clutch to constantly slip with an annoying buzzing sound. Doing the smaller rugs becomes either a team effort - one person holding the rug down while the other one vacuums or when you're by yourself, it looks something like a game of twister where you spread your legs wide in an attempt to hold the rug down while holding the vacuum in two hands and dragging it back and forth between your legs... This was not a cheap hall runner either, I think it was 80 or 100 dollars for a 5 footer!

I have one and you are right, but there is a huge difference in price, iirc (I didn't pay for this one......well with money). It weighs probably 80lb and will chew your arm off. I mostly use it on rugs, but we have sisal in the informal den and it is almost necessary with that stuff.

3 words. Rigid shop vacuum.
Cheap, loud like a jet engine and it will suck the nails out of the floor boards.

They are far superior to any vacuum cleaner I have ever owned. |

A sisal? Welcome to the hairdressers thread, JD - I thought you were above this sappy shop talk? Although your inference that you attained the aforementioned device via illicit means is somewhat manly.
