Apr. 30 - Swedish car giant Volvo sets a target to eliminate death and injury in its vehicles by 2020.

The firm says it is claiming a first in setting a target date in the race to cut the world-wide crash toll of 1.2 million deaths and 50 million injuries each year.

Paul Chapman reports.

What! And put the insurance companies out of business. i seem to remember Volvo being invloved in a lawsuit when they had those commercials with the reinforced steel cages (not provided on the consumer cars) being crashed and the occupents surviving....

Hardly. It would put a certain sector of the plaintiff attorney, chiropractic, massage therapy and physical therapy industry "out of business."

Not to hijack but there was a study just completed that found most of the rivets used in the Titanic were not the ones the architechts requested and where made from inferior materials and had they used the ones specified the ship probably whould have made it.

Back in the 80's, Volvo had an ad showing some cars stacked on top of each other. It turned out the cars were reinforced and braced so the lower cars wouldn't be crushed.

The only way to eliminate death and injury in vehicles is by not driving at all.

NASCAR and other governing bodies have forced race car designers to implement a vast quantity of features that make the cars capable of all sorts of high-speed collisions, with the drivers getting no more than a scratch. Never mind that all of this is limited to protection for a single occupant in a severly spartan compartment...a vehicle that costs prohibitively more than any of us are willing to spend on a vehicle.

And with all of that, some fatalities still occur.

Pretty arrogant claim for any manufacturer to make...

I see it as pure marketing. They have always played the "safest car on the road" claim... this just seems to be the "logical" (or, rather, illogical!) next claim to make. It'll sell cars.
