Thinking of a New York city road trip...questions?

I am thinking of a trip to the big apple to see Architectural sights with my youngest lovely daughter who is studying ARchitecture at BSU.

I want to see the Gugenheim, the Empire state and all mandatory architectural sights including Central park, Brooklin bridge and Grand central station.

Questions:
1. If we take the train in can I get around on foot with my somewhat limited mobility due to recent knee surgery. I can walk blocks comfortably but not miles.
2. Taking a car in is not possible? I used my car with reasonable success in DC but from what I understand NYC is much worse.
3. Is the scaffolding off the Gugenheim yet? I don't think I want to make the trip until we can see it all inside and out.

We'll be staying outside the city where the lodging is cheaper.

My wife and I went a few years back and we found the subway system was pretty easy to use to moving between mid-town and lower Manhattan. That will take the miles out of the walking. There's a lot to see within a few blocks in many places too.

You can buy a day pass on the subway which should take care of any long distance walking problems. East/West movement can be done on a bus. I think the day pass covers the buses and subways if I'm not mistaken. You can buy the day pass when you get off the commuter train coming in to the city.
I've known people to get decent hotel rooms in the $170 per night range in Manhattan. When you factor in the commuter train expenses, those hotels are not so bad.

Yikes! How much are the trains?

Our alternative is a campsite and the train or driving in if that is possible.

I was last at the Guggenheim in 8/07. At that time the exterior paint had been stripped off and the exterior looked like a scaffolding showroom. Why don't you call the museum and ask a live body?

There's a very nice county park with campsites at Croton on Hudson. (it's not in the guidebooks but will show up on a google) Campsites are about half mile from the commuter train station. I think trains were about $14 round trip off peak.

For calculating walking distances..... 20 blocks N/S = 1 mile.... ie: 42nd st. to 63rd = 1 mile. Crosstown blocks are longer going East West. Sat./Sunday is drivable no problem... forget about it on weekdays. Excellent bargain is 1/2 price "day of the show" ticket office in middle of Times Square - reconnoitre broadway musical matinee performances Wed and Sun for $20 each or less, and that aint bad.

Hey

looks like someone stole my idea...ha I'm heading up to NYC this friday through monday. I was going to stay in-city but due to my limited budget I found a cheaper place in NJ--its a little further out but a friend of mine works there..

If you do want to stay in the city, check out the Riverside Hotel (I think its on Riverside & 81st in the upper west side) Its $114/night. I'm told its a safe neighborhood. Theres a parking garage within a block from it and it was going to cost me $115 for 60 hours.

As for sights to see...the financial district has some nice architecture...Brooklyn has some beautiful stuff too. I'm told one should brave the line at Grimaldi's Pizzeria in DUMBO (down under the Manhattan bridge overpass) should also checkout the Brooklyn Promenade especially during sunset...should give you a spectacular view of lower and mid Manhattan..if your knee is willing walk across the brooklyn bridge...im not sure how far that is though so you might not really want to try it...Apparently the Woolsworth building has a stunning lobby...

just some ideas. A friend of mine is going to be a tour guide in the city in the fall and he was telling me about some of the places to see that most tourists that are on controlled fast-paced stuff (like I was in highschool) didnt get to see.

just some ideas. hope you enjoy it.

Oh also if you want cheap Broadway tickets check out www.broadwaybox.com I got front row mezzanine tickets to Spamalot for like $50. They have some pretty good deals.

I stayed at the Belleclaire Hotel about 8 years ago. It's just a few blocks from the Riverside Hotel. It was about the same price as the Riverside but a very dicey place. There were substantial exchanges of cash occurring in the hallways. Wouldn't really recommend it. We chose it because it was just a few blocks from the Museum of Natural History where we were headed to see Shackleton's boat. It was a block or two away from where Noam Chomsky cut his political teeth at his uncle's newsstand.

That sounds good!

Thanks to all. I still need to find out if the Gugenheim is still scaffolded. If it is the trip is off til its open. That is the only must see for me. I think I am up for the brooklyn bridge although I don't think I have to walk to the other side to enjoy it.

The knee is pretty excellent. I worked about 7 hours in the garage on my feet on concrete today without difficulty. Getting up and down without putting any weight on the tender knee cap area though was tricky.

Thanks again.

We stayed at the Holland Motor Lodge last Christmas for about $85/day with free parking. This place sits on the Jersey side of the mouth of the Holland tunnel. It was actually very quiet, safe and convenient. It's a 10 minute walk to a PATH station for a $1.50 10 minute ride to the city.

Go -its a fun trip.

Thanks. I'll put that into the mix too.
