I have not had a har cut in six months. I was tempted to get a good summer cut, but I seems to be letting it grow out. Seems harmless right? Just that I have never done it before, so I figure I should. I wash it every day, BTW.

Once you get to a 5mm buzz, you'll never have long hair again.

Based upon the disthymic trollops you've been attracting I'd hazard a guess the a good grooming and wardrobe change will work wonders.

I used to have long hair back in the seventies. It was down to the middle of my back. I had a long beard, too. What a PITA to take care of! It seemed cool back then, but now I just keep it pretty short. Have fun with it whichever way you go.

Very true ... and not because it won't grow back after cutting it that short.

I suggest you compromise and go for a mullet.

For the past several years, I've had my head shaved or very nearly shaved. Prior to that, I've gone through intermittent bouts of long/short/shaved/whatever with my hair. It's perfectly straight. There is lots of it, but it's very fine. I sometimes miss the easy ponytail, but not very often.

When it was really long (middle of my back long), I would get followed around in stores. People at concerts and on the street would ask me for or if I'd like to purchase drugs (never happened with the shaved head). One of the times I had long hair (in college) I decided to be both sloppy-looking and uber-responsible (running the campus pub, president of a social club, liaison to administration, etc.) just to confound people's stupid perceptions. It sometimes worked- like when I would have a scheduling meeting by telephone with an administrator and then deliver the flawless event... only to have the same administrator ask me if he/she could meet (me) the manager in person (because the hippie in front of him/her couldn't possibly be the manager).

My conservative mother has not approved of a haircut of mine since high school... and that's getting to be more years ago than I'd like to admit. Last few years of clean-shaven self-imposed baldness have been the cleanest and easiest of all haircuts. Just don't forget the sunscreen.

If you do grow out your hair, you'll go through several stages. The worst is what I called "***** length" - the point at which you have hair in your eyes but it won't yet tuck behind your ears. Horrible length - you'll be tempted to cut it often. Don't! Next comes the Dutch Boy look, where your hair tucks behind your ears but is too short to tie back. This was my least favorite, though my ex-wife liked it. Should have known. I suggest against the samurai look - the high ponytail with scraggly under quasi-mullet. It's tempting... but bad news. Do not succumb to the thought that cutting the hair on the back of your neck beneath the high ponytail is a good idea. All one length is what you want.

But, you still need to get haircuts at every step of the process. Get the ends trimmed and everything evened-out. You'll have to get some good conditioner as well- or you'll end up looking like a missing/lost member of Twisted Sister. One guy who used to cut my long hair in Atlanta had formerly toured with Kansas in the same capacity... so while he was accustomed to teasing and volumizing hair, he knew a few things about conditioning. Washing everyday may or may not be a good idea depending on your hair and the products/water you use to clean/condition it. Shampoo warm, apply conditioner then rinse w/ cooler water.

In any case, it's fun to do the social experiment. I really never cared what was going on with my hair, but it was amazing how many other people around me did, and how they thought my hairstyle defined me.

Where would humans be without hair to make social statements? Orthodox Jews, Buddhist monks, LDS polygamist women, Muslim beards, boot camps, all use hair as social markers/controllers. What does it all mean?

What has always been interesting is how others assume that I'm making a statement with my hair. As you correctly point out, many do make such statements. I suppose it's not much different from a peacock or a frilled dragon - using what we've got to make a point - seductive or threatening - to help us survive.

I suppose my current haircut is somewhat grounded in the Buddhist detachment from afflictive attachment to physical appearance, ala the monks. But I'm not attached to that reason

My hair is fine, fuller than a carpet on the sides and towards the top, then this as a newborns' on the top...

Two cuts back, I started out with the usual...two-fingers trim and the thinning shears on the top (it lessened the effect of the "baldness" towards the upper-back) - then, when it was done, I told the gal, "Put the #2 on the clippers and go for it..."

She did and it wasn't too bad...

Last cut, I dove in to the #1 on the clippers...

Bug-eyed the wifey, but I enjoyed the look...

BTW, I still did do the Thinning Shears...too much carpet on the sides...

I don't mind the "bald" jokes or "What happened?" questions (I get it cut about every 8 months or so - usually just before the wrong type of weather sets in for the particular season we're heading into...life's too short to worry about what critics think...remember, it's their opinion...they didn't pay for it and usually, you wouldn't want their cut, even if they paid for yours, so it all balances out...

Listen, A LOT WORSE could be happening to your dome right now (think "Chemo" - although, some of the heads I've seen, after those sessions, have some of the finest and nicest locks when the hair finally starts growing again...), so just be thankful you're able to make these kinds of decisions...

Look around and see what piques your interest and ask someone you trust, for their opinion as to whether that might be the look for you or not...but keep in mind...it's only hair and if you're in relatively good health, it WILL grow back...
