A friend of mine is wanting to get a package from the local cable company to include tv, internet and telephone service. He will also want to run his fax machine thru the same hook up. We were wondering if picking up the phone would disable an incoming fax or vise versa. He is very anal about his fax as it means money to him. The small town cable has yet to be able to give him an answer one way or another. Anyone had any experience with such a situation? TIA

Fax transmissions occur via the phone line...period.

If your friend has only one line, his fax (data) transmissions will coexist with voice on the same line. If your friend does not want his fax interrupted, then he should disable "call waiting" at the very least. That way, if a fax is in progress, a caller will just get a busy signal. Otherwise, the call waiting feature will send a tone that would disrupt the fax.

My printer has fax capability, but I also have more than one line. The printer is configured to send and recieve on that line only, as that line also has call waiting disabled.

The primary drawback we encountered when considering using the cable co for data, tv and phone was that the home phone service is kaput when power goes down. That messes up our residential alarm system that uses the phone line to report when a sensor is tripped or smoke alarms are activated. I don't know about the rest of the country but our local power company has been known to power down a generation facility unexpectedly at times, but it doesn't affect the hardwired phone lines and the el cheapo phones from working.

I'm sure they would be happy to sell him a second (VoIP) line.

I'm guessing that fiber isn't available up there? (My fiber connection has a battery back-up, in case power goes out)

Check the specifications of the fax machine. In most cases the manufacturer will not guarantee performance on a digital phone line. Sometimes you can get it to work by slowing down the communications speed. Sometimes you can't.

Fax is dead technology, pretty much replaced by E-Mail.

$8 a month gets me an internet fax service - which I have used far more often that I thought I was going to (doctor's and lawyer's offices being the primary traffic for me).

Have cable for internet & television - and got the television base package only because getting that bundle was cheaper than getting internet alone

Use Vonage for VoIP, costs $25 per month. Unlimited calls to all of North America, much of Europe, and parts of Asia. I'm on the phone 4-8 hours most weekdays, and in 6 months have had exactly two times where calls were a problem (both solved by rebooting the cable modem and the Vonage box).
