Parents of Teen Drivers
You probably already know that summer is the deadliest month for teens behind the wheels. There was a recent US national survey that has tracked teen driving fatalities (15-19 yr old) from 2000-2006.
Teen Fatality Hotspot Surve PDF July is the month with the highest teen fatalities. Teens in rural accidents are typically twice as likely to be fatal than metro ones. Speeding, not alcohol, is the biggest contributing factor to a teen fatality. The metro areas with the highest teen fatalities, per capita of teen driver accidents are: Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, FL Orlando-Kissimmee, FL Jacksonville, FL Nashville-Davidson--Murfreesboro, TN Birmingham-Hoover, AL Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, AZ Kansas City, MO-KS Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta, GA Charlotte-Gastonia-Concord, NC-SC Louisville, KY-IN |

Phoenix ranked #6. I'm not surprised! Where's L.A. on that list though???
I lived there, and people drive like maniacs there! L.A. freeways are NUTS! |

The survey was of teen fatalities, not just accidents.
Since there is a 2X statistical increase in rural fatalities versus metro areas, fatality rates could be driven by distances driven, roads & lighting, types of vehicles and access to trauma care. |
