The answer is, "Yes."

In my world, communities band together to create the schools that they perceive as needed by their children. Some will have Creationist, authoritarian curricula and some will be touchy-feely. The result will be a society of real diversity, not just varying degrees of epithelial melanin.

Ah I see, you favor the Maddrassah model. I think conditioning young people not to think for themselves is dangerous for democracies.

Certainly not as a universal prescription -- that is EXACTLY the opposite of what I advocate. If you and your community wish to form a school and educate your children in what you believe is the right way, more power to you. I do not believe that other people have any business telling you how to educate your children, whether a kindly, bespectacled Education Secretary or some crazed Taliban fanatic. Education should be between you and your local community.

He doesn't need it. Mr Duggar follows Mr Gothard's principles. He has no debt. It is against biblical principles to borrow any money, including home mortgages.

If he really makes as much money as he is supposed to, I would think the rebates won't apply, will they?

If that is the case here, he must do very well in order to afford a 7,000 sq ft home with out a mortgage.

If they are not on any form of public assistance then I guess more power to them.

Personally I believe it is morally irresponsible to have that many kids. The home schooling scares me as I think it will just bring 18 (and counting) more close minded kids to the world. They just seem to be so far out of the standard social norms that it just does not set right with me.

I am not advocating that it be banned but it is just very odd from my POV.

I agree. I see a lot of home schooled kids. The religiously based ones usually are well behaved, good writers, excellent students in science and math but almost totally unable to grasp the most basic of human problems in the humanities, philosophy, politics and ethics. From their point of view, there are no problems in those areas because they know all the answers. I have one student this semester who's ability to think critically about ethical problems begins and ends with 'That's a liberal point of view." Imagine the stereotypical conservative Christian social ideology and he fits all the patterns. The really sad part is that it is obvious that he himself is as gay as the day is long, yet he is thoroughly anti-homosexual.
I even decided to experiment this semester by trying to meet them on their own terms and designing a whole sequence of readings both in the Bible and philosophical texts around the story of Abraham and Isaac in Genesis. They also watched a film which focused on the story. It was so disappointing to me when virtually every single one failed to see that there was a problem with Abraham deciding he would murder his own child because God asked him too despite the fact that they were appalled when the film presented a modern scenario of the same choice and the character acted like Abraham. It was in the holy text, so there couldn't be problem with it.

On the other hand, I have had a few brilliant non-closed minded home schooled students whose home schooling had no limited ideological basis.
