M1 Garand and Vintage Rifle Match

I spent Sunday at Rio Salado shooting range in Mesa. The club there has a bi-weekly M1 Garand and obsolete Bolt Action match. You shoot the national match course of 50 rounds at 200 yards. Loads of fun to compete against service rifles from the old days.

I was shooting a Yugo Mauser and did horribly but at least it was fun. Nice to see a bunch of M1's Lee Enfields, Swedish Mausers, Swiss K31's out there. One of these days I'm going to try and get a video of ne of these matches and YouTube it.

Sounds cool! My Garand is horrible, can't hit a barn with it... Now my carbine is tight and accurate.

Damnit... I have had a Garand for almost 2 years now and have yet to shoot it. It's one of the CMP rifles; I just haven't had the time to devote to shooting and cleaning it, so it's just set. Every time I hear mention of one I feel the need to get mine out!

I'd like to find an '03 Springfield too. It would round out my US service rifle collection nicely (already have a Garand and a carbine). I just priced an AR-15 as well... my wife will probably use it on me if I bring one home, though. Sigh... wants vs. needs...

About a month ago I attended the M1 Garand Clinic at Rio Salado where they instruct folks on the operation of the M1, and correct use of a sling etc. I used one of the clubs M1's which are all CMP Match grade rifles. We shot the same course of fire 50 rounds at 20 yards. You do 23 slow prone in 20 minutes, the first three being sighters. Then 10 rapid prone in 70 seconds. 10 rapid sitting in 70 seconds. Then 10 slow standing in 10 minutes.

I'd never used an M1 before but I must have been given a remarkably accurate rifle beause I came 5th out of 39 people. The M1 is a fine rifle. I hope to be able to get one from the CMP before they are all gone. Unfortunately the cost is just to much for me at present.

The one I got was all Springfield parts but with a Greek stock. The CMP rifles at the time (a couple of years ago) were mostly ex-Greek or Norweigan (I think) military; they had been loaned to those governments and recently returned, so some had replacement parts. The "collector grade" rifles are all stock and show much less bore wear. They run up into the $2500 range, I think. For a shooter, though, you can't beat a Field Grade CMP Garand (in my opinion)!

No. An M24/47. They are the older straight bolt design. Re-arsenaled examples of what were originally FN M24 Mausers from Belgium. Having a straight bolt makes it a lot harder to cycle the thing when you are shooting prone.
