Thank Dog for wireless internet access! Power outages stink!

We lost power here about 1.5 hours ago and there's no estimate on when it'll be back on. I've got the generator going so that we can at least run our phones, which is very important this time of year, and a few lights. Had to sit down with the door cracked in the restroom so as to keep it all contained.

Fortunately one of my saleswomen had her laptop here for an upgrade by the IT guys so I can at least pass the time between phone calls.

And to think we need to run credit card transactions the old fashioned way with the imprinter. I guess it's a good thing we didn't throw it and all of the old slips out!

you need a bigger generator. Since I moved out to the country(sort of) last month, I have decided to get all the generators running and a big UPS. Got my hands on a 12kva UPS.

That sucks Swamp, but I'm glad you can still access the forum.

All very true although we rarely lose power. I guess a big @$$ maple took down the power lines along with 4 transformers a couple of streets over so I guess we'll be out awhile. We've got UPS's on the mainframe and PC's to give us time to shut them down and on the phone system to at least give us time to dig out the generator and get it fired up. We definitely need a larger on for the phones and fax though since that's really our bread and butter.

The most important thing is accessing The Forum not to mention you can use a shaker for your Martinis and don't need a blender!

Here's the only way to "surf the net" without power.

Not having "the grid" supplying power sometimes is a reminder about how fragile our American lifestyle can be.

The last time my power went out it freaked me out. We are so dependent on electricity! Life seems to grind to a stop without it.

You need a Blackberry or Smartphone.... You can surf the forum when you have no power, or even better, surf the forum while using the "head".

It's true. Imagine if the financial/banking networks went down for any period of time.

It's a microcosm here in our warehouse. The power goes out and everyone just stands around and looks at each other because they can't use the computer, point of sale, phone, etc. They all go into standby waiting for me to dig out the generator, fill it up with gas, fire it up, plug it in to the generator outlet, run an extension cord to the auxillary lights. And forbid a walk-in customer comes into the store and -gasp- they have to write up the order by hand and use a calculator (imagine if there weren't enough light for the photovoltaic cell and they had to use a pen and paper???) for those pesky sales tax charges. Imprint a credit card, write down the V code AND get a signature??? They might as well be exploring space!

It's certainly hard for some to break out of the mold they've so become accustomed to.
