Cholesterol -- are you taking anything?

I just heard from my doctor about this, the result of a blood test about 10 days ago. Back in November my then-doctor told me I was coming in at 260, which I know is high. So I changed my diet quite a bit, going to veggie burgers and pasta and checking everything for fat and cholesterol content -- and now he tells me the count is up to 270!

I'm about 5-8 pounds overweight, but until a recent knee strain I worked out 3-4 times a week, 15-20 minutes, and have always been inclined to walk and be active, I don't drink or smoke, and my blood pressure is normal. Quite possibly, they say, it's genetic.

Have any of you been diagnosed with this sort of high level? Are you taking anything for it, and if so, are there any side effects? If I stay active, should I worry very much?

Actually, I was concerned about mine several years ago. Besides cholesterol, I was also worried about diabetes, as several of my friends were diagnosed with that. As a result, I decided to do the Atkins diet not only to lose weight, but also to change my eating habits. Over the next three years my blood sugar and LDL numbers went down each year. My HDL went up.

I'm not saying that my diet was the sole reasoin for this, but I think it contributed to it. It might not help you, but I thought I'd mention it. There's only so much you can do about somethings.

Yep. A HUGE part of it.

Mine was running about 215 or so when I went in for the mitral valve repair. Other than the broken valve, all my arteries, size, shape, etc. were looking great.
My cardiologist told me my high numbers were about 85% liver function and the rest what I eat and do.

He put me on Vytorin 10/20. The last check up, I was at 98. No sh-t.

No side effects at all.

That's great. I didn't know there was anything that could make that bid of a difference.

Yes. Not sure exactly what but the wife manages it.

They give the usual boilerplate statements about side effects. Here is a little trick the wife picked up in skool. When you discuss side effects, you memorize the usual crap. Remember the few different ones. Otherwise you are stuck to remembering all of the side effects for each drug.

Do you want me to ask my wife? She would have a better idea. I just take what she puts in the pill cup.

I didn’t either.
When I got the first numbers, I all but sh-t straight up. I thought I was
going to either have to make some ridiculous dietary changes or just die.

Then he told me not to worry about it. Take the Vytorin and come back in 6 weeks.
So, I did. And what a relief that was. That was a couple of years ago. I go in every 6 months now. Still running around 100.

Hey, Aklim,

Yeah, I'd like to have some idea. Is it Vytorin, like WVOtoGo's, or Lipitor (which sounds like a prehistoric dinosaur -- "The lipitors are coming!")? Or something else?

I was put on 80 mg Lipitor after a heart attack 9/30/07.
My total cholesterol at the time was 197, an OK number for most folks.
Unfortunately for me, I was not "most" folks. I'm somewhat overweight, was a smoker, had a M.I., and had marginal high blood pressure. That's 4 strikes, too many to allow my cholesterol to remain where it was.
Three months later, my TC had dropped to 88. In these 3 months, I had basically given up all fat. The Dr switched me to 40 mg Lipitor. Another 3 months, and I was having major memory lapses & brain farts. Dr took me off Lipitor, put me on Crestor 10 mg, and my cognitive functions vastly improved pretty rapidly.
I'm doing everything I can to NEVER need that nasty Lipitor crap again.
I now exercise daily, eat lots of "good" fats, avoid all the tasty animal fats, and I'm feeling & looking much better. I've educated myself a lot, and firmly believe I will soon be off the Crestor.

Man, You people are a bunch of amateurs. I was a walking solid. Im 6'4" and about 200-205. A few years back (5 or so) I was over 400. Yes you read that right. I got some crap genetics (the milk man is the top of my list but dad says no dice).

Doc put me on Nispan and Tricor. Go it down below 200 now and it is droping with exercise as well.

Beat that.

Mine was a lot higher about 2 years ago, high 200 to low 300.

My Dr was kind of shocked because I am in very good shape and exercise regularly.

She started quizzing me about what I had been eating lately.

Turns out I was eating too much of the good cholesterol(s) like avocado, peanuts, etc.... which had an adverse affect on my levels.

I started watching what I ate even more and they went back to normal in about 3 months.

I have a home test that is pretty easy to use and I monitor it that way.

Good luck!
