Vegas roadtrip. which car?

I'm having an polite argument with a buddy of mine. We're planning a roadtrip to vegas next week and can't decide which car would be best:

1982 300td
2005 c230K
His honda civic.

I feel, and I suspect that most of you feel the same way, that the 300td would be most comfortable for the 5 hour drive from San Diego to Las Vegas. However, fuel economy, diesel prices, a pass over the mountains, speed, finicky cruise control, lesser radio, and lack of cupholders, have me second guessing taking the 300td.

The C offers better A/C, radio, cruise control, fuel economy and is considerably faster. I worry about traffic tickets. It's superior A/C will be slightly offset by the black interior and lack of window tint. It's a comfortable car for long drives, just not as smooth and soft on the freeway.

To be fair, my buddy offerred to drive his civic. I told him no cause his seats are too uncomfortable. I hate that car to tell you the truth.

Any non-biased advice out there?

The newer Mercedes, of course. Which one is least likely to break and most likely to be quickly serviced should a breakdown occur? Dealers don't keep much parts inventory these days for newer cars, let alone for a 25-year-old vehicle. Speeding tickets? Use the cruise control to set a reasonable speed.

I would take the C230...especially when you are driving through the desert when it's this hot out.

Well then the C-class. They are pretty comfortable cars as long as no one is forced to sit in back.

Nah, it's just two of us. The trick with back-seat passegers is to adjust the telescoping steering wheel and seat so that the driver doesn't "sit" in the back seat. You can basically keep the same driving position, just a little bit closer to the dash. I'm 6'1" and can get pretty comfortable when driving with someone behind me.

You certainly would want to drive the one that's least likely to have a break down.

Keep in mind, garage stops abroad are usually more costly than in your home town.

Also, the heat makes weird things happen, trust me ...

I a need help with one of your Mercedes, German Motors behind the Fashion Mall off The Strip is reliable, won't screw you over.

There is at least one other, who's name I can't remember, a few blocks off The Strip on Tropicana.

That should settle it right there.

If for some reason, it doesn't, then the C class's seat comfort, inarguable safety, and great economy should clinch the deal

EXACTLY!

WHy are we even talking about 25 year old or Honda cars? To get the most bang for the buck from a casino show up in a car that looks like you can afford to lose $$

Fly.

Driving to Vegas... ...well, I take that back. Driving back FROM Vegas is no fun.

Of course that has not been an option for me for many years. Atlanta is a long drive from Vegas!

C230. drove to vegas from San Diego in my 240d with my friend behind me in his 300d and going through the cajohn pass (sp?) was a very humbling experience. I was in second gear in the truck lane, with the hazards on, with trucks passing me. Heck of a road trip tho.....

I did not realise that the C class has "awesome" air conditioning. How is it any better than other vehicles or is that just in relation to older Mercedes? Living in Phoenix and comming up on a vehiclular replacement situation soon the previous C might be something I'd consider if that's the case.
