Question

So I was invited to part take of a friend's wedding and was told to have my tuxedo fitted at a certain store. After it was all done, the clerk handed me a bill for $175. WTF?????

I didn't have to pay for my tux the last couple weddings I was in. It was all taken care by the wedding party. Is it normal that I have to pay for my own tux? Anyone had the same happened to them? So going to this wedding is going to cost me $175. Not including gifts. I wish the groom had told me ahead of time and I would have gently declined the privilege of the "inner circle".

I hate weddings, and avoid all that I can. Currantly I am dodging one that is in NC.

Traditionally, the tux rentals are paid individually by the groomsmen, just as the wedding dress are paid for by the attendants.

Yes. The wedding where they paid it for you is the exception.

I love weddings.

A) The groom should have told you ahead of time.
B) Pay it and be done with it. You could ask another groomsman about it, but I'd drop it otherwise.
C) Don't buy a gift - you're already in for $175.

Better yet, many of the tux rental places charge the groomsmen, but the groom gets his tux for free. And guess who chooses the rental place.

When my lil bro re-married, he stuck me in the wedding party...

Picked up the tux and a $105.00 bill I hadn't planned on...I wish I had kept my angst to myself...the wifey was trying to fight my battle for me on that one...I managed to quell my anger (and calm her down) when I was able to get to a local library and look up wedding etiquette - and it mentioned that the groomsmen are responsible for their own costs in renting the tuxes and related material.

But, you're right...it would be nice to be reminded that you need to come up with the scratch for the clothing...

Somewhere, in the back of my mind, I might have remembered my mother mentioning stuff like that...way back when...

Hey, at least, I had the clean underwear part correct! Made the fitting alot nicer for all concerned!

Typically, the cost should be covered by the groomsman.

Wedding costs are skyrocketing in that only the well-heeled can afford to foot the bill for everything these days. A couple of decades ago, a $50K wedding was an incredibly lavish affair...not so much these days!

My wife and I covered our own expenses when we got married so we had a modest ceremony. Our bridal party was also small, to reduce cost.

I once had to play for a wedding where the family couldn't even afford to pay me! Too bad the actual marriage lasted less than a year!

Shortest marriage I witnessed was several years ago when 2 obsessive-compulsive AA members married, and were seperated before the proofs for the wedding pictures were done.
