Heh

Thanks!

Unfortunately my peepers are in good shape, but I know who to ask if (more likely when) they go south

Nice looking 300 there. Had an 83 240D, looked just like it.

OK, I'm going to take you up on the offer. No need to do it by PM as it is not that personal and it may help someone.

I'm a 40ish male, been wearing glasses for probably 20 years. My prescription has been steady for several years and I get my eyes checked every few years. I fell I see pretty good with my glasses

I wore contacts a lot in my 20's, and of course I was irresponsible and slept with them. I haven't worn them for at least ten years. I have two separate complaints. When I look at a bright clear sky, I see what looks like little squwiggles in the sky. It's not really noticeable any other time. Thats the first complaint.

The other complaint is it seems like I have a tiny hair in the film on my eyeball, but it's not a hair, it almost looks like looking at an amoeba on a slide. It seems to be a bit to the left side, and when I try to look at it, it will move with my eyeball as it turns. I wonder if I tried to give my eyes a good rinse in the shower I might wash it away, but I never think to do it. It does not bother me much and like the other complaint, it is not noticeable unless I look at the sky.

Any ideas what these are?

Thanks

Peter

Lol...those are 'floaters', usually a deterioration of the gel layer in your eye. Nothing to do about it. Like you said - most noticeable against a clear blue sky. Wear sunglasses outdoors to protect your eyes. I have them too, most people do I think.

Here's more info -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floaters

P.S. The guitarist from Queen, Brian May, is obssessed by these and I think he made a website about it. Why I know this I cannot really recall...

All right, here is one of general interest.

In your opinion, do you think the risks now outweigh the benefits of getting contact lenses. I wore glasses ever since 1955 when I was a little boy and I am used to them. Can you sleep with them, how to clean, and take care of them, what about if you lose one etc.

How dangerous is that Lasik thing

Also how come so few equivalent amounts of females wear them, is it that vanity thing, Dorothy Parker about men never make passes at girls that wear glasses, etc.

Also. Anyone who is like you and has a Mercedes diesel and loves it, if you haven't figured it out, this place is loaded with men who like to help a girl in trouble. I am sure that is a big surprise to you.

OK, I have floaters.

Any idea about the sqwiggles? It seems to be unrelated to the floaters.

Jim, I wear the "Day/Night" extended wear lenses. Due to their design that allows more oxygen to get to the eye, you can wear them 24/7, with a recommended soaking once a week. A set is good for 30 days.

The biggest benefits to me are 1) great peripheral vision; 2) having eyesight when waking and most important . . . 3) I can break down, chop, dice, mince onions all day long without tearing since the fumes don't make it past the contacts.

I too am interested in hearing about the lasik pros and cons, as I'm seriously considering getting it done now.

believe it or not but your two complaints are the same thing. They are called floaters. they have nothing to do with he surface of the eye. Basically the eye is filled with a jelly called vitreous, composed of collagen strands. As we age those strands congeal and cast shadows on the retina (the back of the eye) and that is what you are seeing. from your post, it appears to me that you are myopic (near sighted), and near sighted people seem to develop floaters earlier on in life - this is normal, i have a few myself, and im only 27. In extreme cases floaters can trouble people a great deal, in which case surgery is available to remove them, but again, that is only in extreme cases.
Hope i answered your questions.

Contact Lenses

I would never advocate to anyone that wearing contact lenses 24/7 is ok, because its not (even though i do it). There are severe risks that can entail from doing so. Besides corneal edema (which is caused by lack of oxygen going to the cornea) to pannus, neovascularization, and infection.

I had a patient a month or so ago who had to undergo a corneal transplant from contact lens abuse. DONT DO IT.

If you ever wake up in the morning after sleeping in contacts and your vision is hazy, you have corneal edema. This clears up within a day or so.

Women are generally more comfortable touching their eye than men, they put on mascara, etc, so to put a CL it, its not a big deal. From my experience, men are more squeamish when it comes to that.

Peter,
I'll be 50 in December, I've the same amoeba like image in my right eye. I always blamed it on looking at mosquito guts on my first microscope, possibly with the aperture open too wide.
Regards,
David

Lasik

There are 2 mainly popular procedures that fall under "Laser Vision Correction".

LASIK and PRK.

Lasik cuts a flap in the cornea and does a laser treatment on the stroma (inner layer) of the cornea. The flap is then replaced. Healing time is shorter and vision is restored more rapidly (3 days-1 week). Minimal pain.

PRK is used in people whos corneas are not thick enough for lasik. In this case the epithelium is scraped off and a surface laser treatment is performed. 1 out of 3 patients experience pain for a maximum of 3 days. Vision is restored in 1-2 weeks.

The benefit of PRK is that there is no flap created and therefore you will not experience possible flap issues post-op. (ex. flap dislocation, flap striae -ie.wrinkles, etc..all which compromise vision)

IMPORTANT:
Any refractive laser procedure is primarily done on people under the age of 40 or so. Lasik will not benefit you if you currently walk around with no glasses and only use them to read. If you are over 40 and are looking to get out of glasses totally, google the ReStor lens.

THIS IS GENERALLY SPEAKING OF COURSE. Individual needs should be assessed by your local ophthalmologist.

floaters

they come in all different shapes, amoeba shapes, hair like shapes, dots etc.
if they move when you move your eye, you can be sure they are floaters.
