Arugula

I can scarcely believe the brew ha-ha around it.

How many have tried it? I first had some about 5 or 6 years ago. Not bad, not bad at all. Definitely gives a salad a little extra sparkle -- don't use too much, it's potent. Supposed to be quite nutritious as well.

So parents, if you're having trouble getting little junior to eat his salad, put in a wee bit of arugula, available at fine grocers everywhere. Tell 'em Barack Obama sent you.

The stuff sells like hotcakes in packets, especially in areas with heavy Italian populations. But it is spreading out into the general salad loving population. $1.50-$2.00 will buy you a packet with about 200 seeds in it which will keep you in Arugala/Rocket up to your eyeballs. It grows great in containers, too, so plant your own!

Had a couple of friends, organic farmers, who grew arugula and a large number of other specialty salad crops they hand-delivered to a wealthy clientele. For services rendered, they used to give me a basket now and then. It included arugula. I liked it fine, but no more than any other green leafy salad material. I've never grown it.

I've always wondered how hotcakes got the reputation for being the best selling item ever. I'll have to look into this more.

I like a spring mix salad occasionally, but prefer romaine or butter lettuce.

I'm definitely more of a leaf lettuce fan but a little Arugala, Escarolle and Cicoria (Italian Dandelion) thrown into the mix livens it up a little bit. They are definitely on the bitter side.

The bitterness helps cut through all of the bacon, cheese and Gorgonzola/Bleu Cheese/Ranch dressing. (Just kidding of course. Well, mostly.)

Arugula is great stir-fried with onions and garlic, seasoned with simple sea salt.

I've put it on gourmet pizzas that I have made: flat bread pizza with peaches, goat cheese, prochiuto, and arugula. Don't knock it till you try it.

Talking I dunno --

There's just something about its name . . . "arugula" . . .

. . . makes me think of "jugular," and "Dracula" . . .

Love it! We've grown it in our gardens. Along with fresh cilantro and tons of other stuff. My wife makes a delicious home-grown gazpacho soup every late summer, it's like a mark of passage. Late summer evenings, cool breeze, good food and wine...life is good.

Nah, I think you can grow this stuff outside, lessen of course you live in a highly Republican district.

Looks a bit like Spinach, darker green than most lettuce, I definitely wouldn't want a salad of it alone but it does add some, how you say in English, leetle beet of pizzazz to a salad.
