Jeep $2.99 Gas Promotion
I saw an add for this on TV today. Most new Jeeps get $2.99/gal gas, for the first 12,000 miles per year for 3 years from the date of purchase.
That's insane. It works by giving you some special Fleet card that's linked to a Mastercard or Visa. The Fleet card records the amount of gallons spent, and then the Fleet company bills your V/M credit card $2.99 * gallons used. I wonder how they calculate the 12,000 miles...maybe it's something like (12,000 / EPA_Estimated_MPG) gallons of gas limit per year? It applies to DIESEL also. I wonder what the margin on these things are, given that there could be like $10000 of fuel.

I agree, it is insane.
Help us sell gas guzzlers by artificially deflating the real short-term cost of ownership so that the buyer and the world will have yet another unsustainable vehicle to deal with. Just what we all need.

I don't see the problem. If it gets so 30 mpg, thats 400 gallons a year or 1200 gallons for 3 years. Right now they are going to have to pay an extra $1.50? per gallon so they are on the hook for $1800 bucks. That is probably less than some other incentives you could get. Gimmick. I think if fuel prices get to the point where this gets painful for Chrysler, they have much bigger problems to deal with. Like who's going to buy a "Hemi" at $6 a galon?

Isn't "cash back" typically applied as an increased finance balance?
Like, the truck is $15k + $5k cashback. Isn't your loan $20k, then? Or is it really a "bonus" that you get to keep.

__________________________________________________ 12K miles ÷ 25mpg = 480 gallons @ 3.929/gallon = $450.72 "savings" is the same as... (12,000/25) · (3.929-2.99) = 450.72 or (12,000/a) x (b - 2.99) = c where: a = mpg/on vehicle of choice (and it will, probably, be figured on the higher of the two MPG Estimates for the vehicle...HIghway Mileage) b = what the current price of gas is where you're buying it from (the vehicles' manufacturer will determine your Octane level - "Nothing other than 87 Octane or whatever the minimum Octane is specified in the owner's manual.") c = your "savings" on gas if you had paid for it out of your own pocket... __________________________________________________ This is just for the one year...and you drive the full 12,000 miles...now, if you drive more than 12,000, no additional savings...you just have to wait for next next (Right, CUB fans? ) You could "spreadsheet" this formula fairly easy, but to see, quickly, what the potential savings could be, just jam your selection of the numbers in the oppropriate places and remember that after 3 years, you still own the beast and the gas "give-away" has gone away... Buy the "used" vehicle you want (Did we forget about depreciation?), make sure it's in good shape and enjoy what life-style we may have yet...life's getting too short to be worrying about 12,000 miles per year of gimmicks and over-inflated new-car pricing. Unless someone is handing me the keys to a new SLK 300 (that I may have won in a lottery) all I'm going to concern myself about is whether I can still get from Point A to Point B without freezing my tukus off or wearing wet clothes all day, eating store-bought food, if there's a roof over my head at night and whether there are dry clothes on my back and behind. Shoes wouldn't hurt either. Oh, and the gift tax on that SLK 300!

People are *****ing about high gas prices so this makes it look easier to own a car, gas guzzler or not. This is part of the "I care" thing that companies are trying to promote to stupid consumers. Another thing that you are not seeing is this. A rebate is instant. A gas card is NOT. What does this mean? Well, it means that DCX gets to keep your money for a longer time while telling you that they care and you think you are getting a deal. That is true. We need to move cars at this time.

Don't believe in it whatsoever. I don't think we know enough to predict these things. IIRC, they predicted peak oil even before the first oil well was sunk.
