Tire pressure monitoring system

I am looking for a wireless pressure monitoring system. There are several out there, I am wondering if anyone has real world experience with them?

The products I have seen require a pressure monitor in each valve stem, and a central receiving/display unit. My issue is I have multiple vehicles and I don't want to have to buy a complete system for each one.

I would like to have 1 display unit and have it work on multiple vehicles. I also have 2 trailers, one with a single axle and the other a tandem. Luckily my tow vehicle has its own system already. Plus having a sensor on the spare tire is a good idea as well.

And ideas/suggestions out there?

thanks
Fred

Buy a good tire air pressure gauge.

The hose gets twisted when the tire is rolling at 70MPH, hate to damage it. How do you handle it?

Orange and Hella are the two players that I've heard of, I have a friend that owns a fairly large tire dealer and will ask him next time we chat. I'm looking into sensors for my truck the big tires are nail magnets and the pressure varies widely due to Michigans hot/cold cycles, with the gas prices it should make sense and since its now wifeys daily driver it's a safety issue as well.

I had a nice response typed up, but the server went down for "heavy maintenance"...

Dont buy those valve stem caps with the moniter in them, the aluminum corrodes to the copper, and seizes... I see it happen at our store about once a month... Ends up that by the time they notice it's low, it's seized, and then they get to spend around $30 for new valve stems and dismounts... Plus the waiting around.

It takes about 5 min's to check the tires before the trip. If they're not low before it, they wont be low again unless you pick something up along the way. If that's the case, you can feel it, and know to carry spare's.

If your <16" trailer tires are more then 6 years old, replace them. A new tire (with rim) costs like $70, and most places put them on for free. A blowout on the road can easily cost that much before tire replacment costs in damage to the trailer or it's cargo.

If you dont know how old your tires are, check the DOT code. Any good tire installer will mount trailer tires with the DOT's on the outside edge.

very good and brief decription of what you should know.

Same with car tires... Dont get me started on some slow moving ones at walmart... When I got tires for my tracker, she (the tire lady) brought out a set of dust covered ones with dot code 1800, and tried to explain that they were good because the tread was good... I said put them back, and bring me ones no older then one year old... I got what I wanted, just took some time.
Sears is worse... Low volume...

Buy a digital tire pressure checker, they're $15 tops for a very nice one with a built in flash light...

What brand and line of tires do you have? I'd buy road hazzard. Some places will let you, some wont. It's worth it to try after the tire purchase, but before you get a sidewall puncture and are out a $150 tire, plus mount and balance...

Walmart's road hazzard is $10 per tire or so, and they dont mind selling it after the mount. If the average idiot can buy a tire repair kit, and it works, I trust that walmart can fix one. It's REALLY not that hard...

Goodyear All-Terrain, soon to be BF All-Terrains, the place where I buy my tires has free road hazard with purchase or if you have purchased tires for another car so include a new car that they will eventually put tires on. I don't think its a stretch to say that I had more than 6 nails and screws last year.

Dang... Your roads sure are screwy ;p

Might consider having the balance "checked" and rebalanced as needed. Most chain places do that for free, and you only pay if they need it.
Our patch plugs throw off most tires by a little bit. 6 or so would definetly be off...

My trailer tire had a nail and the pressure was not low enough to show until I put my car on it and started driving. Almost rolled it off the rim before I discovered it, luckily I was driving through the neighborhood and I could hear the tire squealing.

I bought a boat a couple of years ago, one tire exploded on the way home and the other exploded when I was backing into the NTW drive bay.

BTW, I'll never buy from NTW again, those bastards charged 15 bucks to test a battery and would not credit when I bought a battery. If I wasn't in a jam I would have told them to kiss my ass. Sears did it for free.
