Station Wagons

Why have they seem to have gone by the wayside. I think it is wrong that people buy these little suvs that have less rooom then a wagon and get worse milage. I have had three Volvo wagons over the years and they have been great. It seem like people don't want to be seen in a wagon, so they buy the most compromising vehicle that they can. I actually think that the MB wagons as well as the Volvo Turobo wagons are quite nice.

I think the minivan kinda doomed them. After that, the SUV came along. Just evolved, I think. Personally, if I didn't have to tow, I might have bought one of them since they sit lower than my Excursion. I prefer to sit lower. OTOH, the Excursion has one great advantage. From up there, you can look down at the driver in the left side if it is summer and the girl looks hot.

I'm looking at buying a new (yes, a NEW) Subaru stationwagon with the flat-four diesel.

On my recent visit to Europe, the Europeans definately "get it". From my perspective, I would say the 60 to 70% of the private vehicles are station wagons. If you think about it, why not buy a wagon over a car ? When I drive my TE, it is no different than driving the 400E, motor excluded of course, but I can't stuff an antique table in the back of the 400.

I emailed Subaru USA a month or so back and asked about this. At the time, they said they had no timeline. One of the car magazines, I think, suggested a 2009 release for the 2010 model year.

I love mine. I hate minivans. They are the scourge of the earth! Some of the most irritating drivers I encounter are driving minivans. . . . . and yakking on cell phones, ansd not paying any attention to the other people on the road.

I agree. Much of my childhood was spent in station wagons. I was unaware that Subaru was bringing out a diesel wagon. Might be interesting to check it out.

Seen them in anything from a moped to a semi, yakking on the phone, playing games with the kids, etc, etc. I don't think it is just minivans.

I sold my Blazer to buy my wagon. Better fuel mileage, more room, and nicer handling.

While I can totally understand the benefits of the minivan (storage space, ease of getting to the kids from the front, ease of loading) I couldn't bring myself to get one and opted for the Classic w123 Estate. Since that day I've become a wagon convert. I have owned wagons before but was never "proud" of them, they were just transportation.

I may buy other types of vehicles in the future, but there will always be a MB wagon in my stable.

If the Chrysler Pacifica isn't a station wagon on steroids, I don't know what is.
Isn't that the idea of a "crossover vehicle"

IIRC, the "crossdresser vehicle" was one where you have the body of an SUV on a car chassis.

The Ford Flex draws the crossover back to station wagon albeit devoid of styling. I don't really care about exterior styling if the vehicle does the job (and doesn't have the flash of a Cadillac, Lincoln or Mercury) so I'm going to see if a Flex can replace our Suburban - we don't tow, we don't need a foot of ground clearance (thought it's nice to not need a jack) but we need something more maneuverable than a full size van. I hope they offer a 9-seat option.

I wish MB would sell 9-seat Vitos here. Maybe Europa can can Federalize them now that MBUSA offers Gs.

Wagons I have loved in the past...

My 1957 Nomad -- fast, class, and could haul lumber The only thing wrong with it was that the rear opening was only 3 feet and so you could not load sheetrock into the back.

My 1992 and 2000 Subarus. I loved both versions of the Legacy wagon that I owned. In fact I loved them so much that my brother has ended up with three of his own.

1999 Suburban -- yes it is a station wagon albeit a big one. No way it is an off road vehicle. It can hold sheets of sheetrock or plywood flat and still have room for people.

Wagons are the most fuctional and versatile vehicles out there.
I would have loved getting a MB wagon with an OM603 in it instead of the SDL...

Subraru's ad is misleading announcing "It's Here"

Wifey drives a wagon (Taurus) as the work beater to the parking lot of dings at UMC. She likes it
