Voluntary health screening, Or we'll raise your rates....

So what's voluntary about it if they're gonna raise your rates if you don't go ? I wasn't worried because I'm reasonably healthy for a 41+ year old guy. Total cholesterol is 122, glucose is 90, b/p is 110 over 74, weight is 199 at 6'2" and body fat is 17%. Still seems like extortion tho and a way to either jack up your rates or drop you entirely if they don't like what they see. The movie Gattica comes to mind.....

Health insurance thru work does this annual "voluntary health screening". It's strictly "voluntary" but not going gives them license to raise your rates...

Not sure. They haven't raised my rates whether I go to the doctor or not for health screening. I have a personal NP so I go to the MD when I need narcotic analgesics.

Voluntary my a$%. It's nothing more than an evil example of corporate extortion(sp) if you ask me.

IIRC, many were happy that they excluded smokers or raised their rates.

Question. Are they doing the screening to make you more aware of your health problems or are they doing it to deny you insurance or raise your rates? IOW, if I go for that screening, can my rates to up?

It's great as long as you don't have any bad habits such as over eating, over drinking, smoking, etc. I guess it's nice to think that you get something in exchange for living a boring life, free of all fun, but unhealthy pasttimes.

I remember my doctor asking me questions during an annual checkup a few years ago. He wanted to know if I smoked, how much I drank, did I wear a helment when i rode my bike, and finally, "Do you have any guns in the house?"

I told him that even though I let him squeeze my balls and stick his finger up my butt, he was over the line asking about guns and such. Also, I told him I thought bike helments were for pussies.

Was it good for you?

Yes and no. Small injuries, yes. Major injuries, no

My wife's place of employment is requiring a full physical once a year as preventive maintenance or they will drop your coverage. Their reasoning is, by being preventive, it will reduce overall costs by not waiting until your issues are beyond simple treatments.

And knowing the people out there that don't do simple preventative measures, I would think that is a reasonable request. But like I asked, would they re-rate you because you had some nasty habits they found on their mandatory physical?

They are doing it to collect actuarial data and it is wrong, and should be a violation of HIPPA. The company gets a break on rates by subjecting its employees to the data collection, hence the threat your rates may go up.

They say no. Your policy is already set and this is an attempt at saving money overall.

They dropped my boss' coverage to "Economy" because he didn't and had a triple bypass 3 years ago.

It's all well and good if it's "for your benefit to alert you" but that to me sounds just like "This call is being recorded for training purposes". BS.
