Advice on buying an old Ford truck.

It is a 1996 FORD F350 XL Diesel. I am not sure if it is a powerstroke, but it is a 7.3L. ( does that make it a Powerstroke?) It was owned by a large city and was used for snowplowing. It comes with the plow, which I need. It is a 4x4 automatic.

It is going to be auctioned. I can inspect it at the preview before the auction. I can start it but not drive it.

What I am looking for are ideas of what to look at so I can decide to bid on it or pass. Even if I bid, I would only bid maybe $2500 at most, so I won't be risking much.

Thanks

Peter

I would visit oilburners.net and look at the appropriate forum. There is a LOT of information on IDI and powerstroke diesels.

The "OBS" (old body style) trucks are solid and have a loyal following. Many thought Ford sold out when they forsake the traditional truck look and unleashed their jellybean styling pen on the trucks for '97.

6.9 and early '90's 7.3 are IDI
'94 and up 7.3 is a Powerstroke turbo.

The '96 is a solid truck, the last of it's breed and should serve you well. Auto tranny is the weak spot as is the induction system (if you're inclined towards modification). The manual tranny is solid but plowing snow with one may get old fast.

If you can find one, consider a late '99 or '00 Superduty. It's head and shoulders above the previous model, bigger, more powerfull and plusher inside. I love mine and have driven it all over the country.

Be sure to check the oil for coolant and vice versa.

Get a pack of coolant dip strips and check the coolant for proper levels of stuff to prevent cavitation.
