No one needs a PI license to report child porn or something which is not apt. This is a moronic law period.

Yes, I see this scenario happening on a routine basis.........nearly everybody will be at risk due to the new law because the technicians at the first shop are a bunch of idiots and cannot easily fix a slow machine. This is likely to happen to everybody...............

Go back to Post #4...
Some politi-wack got caught (or a good friend) doing something on the confuser... Now, the PW wants to punish anyone that might find something and turn it over to authorities or ex-spouses or whatever... If you're too dumb to REALIZE that your information on your computer might/will/is being seen, then buddy, you deserve all the punishment that the world can dish out. Passing more laws to restrict PC-repairs strikes me as an abuse of power. Someone in the Texas Dept. of Justice should be starting an investigation into the dumbass that authored this legislation and further, anyone that has anything to do with this idiot. Thank you much I'm not living down there...

If you are going to participate in illegal activities on your computer, you should be smart enough to cover your @ss. Why do you think I store my downloaded data and other stuff on external encrypted drives? If I even remotely suspect something is afoul its much more easy to make an external drive disappear. Even if they locate it, without the 10+ character mixed password the drive is useless to them.
Fools that are found with incriminating evidence on their PC, especially if they take it to a repair shop, deserve to get caught. It's my data. If I simply want to retrieve it I don't need a PI to do that any more than I need a cop to find my misplaced checkbook.
From Da Nag's link: by h3llfish (663057) on Wednesday July 02, @02:36AM (#24026783) From your answer, I would guess that you have never done this type of IT work before. For most small businesses, it's not nearly as simple as just chucking the old one and getting a new one. First and foremost, there's the small matter of migrating the data. For instance, one firm that employs me has been using Quicken 2001 for their accounting needs. That product is no longer sold. Getting their crucial accounting data from that old program to some new software is far beyond the average user... FAR beyond. Just choosing a new program to migrate to is more than most small business owners want to deal with. So, they're faced with the choice of either hiring me (or someone like me) to help them with that, or else attempting to do it themselves with the aid of tech support, which will be frustrating and time consuming at best. This law really hoses people like that. They'll be paying twice as much for that type of service, all so that some private dick can be clicking the keys. I do think you're correct about a black market for computer repair being created. That's what happens every time the government tries to limit commerce. I'm not always against government regulation. I'm not one of those free market extremists who think that the government should be abolished. But, this is certainly too much.
