I believe Mr. Williams said that we would have to cook up a reason to attack Iran before they carried out their plans.

Did we ever find those weapons of mass destruction in Iraq?

Is there going to be a military Fire Sale anytime soon?

No but AFAIK the Iraq thing was the biggest topic of disagreement between the two countries in recent history.

Yup, it's the GOP in the US that has its head in the sand. Iraq never was the main frontline against terror. OBL is still on the loose and the Taliban are growing strong last time I checked.

Senioritis and Legacy Building on Overdrive

May 15, 2008, President's Speech to Israel's Knesset

Some seem to believe that we should negotiate with the terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along,. We have heard this foolish delusion before. As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: “Lord, if I could only have talked to Hitler, all this might have been avoided. We have an obligation to call this what it is, the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history.

July 16, 2008: WH Press Secretary, Donna Perino:

As I said, there is no negotiation here. We are going there. Under Secretary Burns will be there as a part of the international community showing our unison that we are going to provide two paths for the Iranians from which to choose -- one, that they could accept the incentives package, and then if it's verified that they have halted their uranium enrichment, then there will be negotiations. And that's what I would seek to explain to the American people.

July 18, 2008: Sec of State, Condaleeza Rice:

The United States doesn't have any permanent enemies, and we hope that the signal that we're sending that we fully support the track that Iran could take for a better relationship with the international community is one that the United States stands fully behind. We will see what happens on Saturday but that is the message that Bill Burns will be delivering.

Bush is nearing the end of his term and is desperate for some sort of legacy. As a result, the partial voices of reason (Condy and Gates) have recently prevailed over the hawks (like Chenney) in convicing the dummy in charge to try something else besides "cowboy diplomacy".

Another flip flop if you will: Bush agrees to "time horizon" on troop withdrawal.

Isn't that cutting & running?

You have forgotten his speeches in which he repeatedly said, "As the Iraqi security forces stand up we will stand down."

This week the coalition forces returned another province to Iraqi control. That is what we call, "Standing up".

Standing down is when coalition forces remove themselves from the theater of operations -- as the UK did in S. Iraq upon their turn-over to Iraqi forces.

You're missing the point. The point is this is the first time ever that Bush agreed to anything remotely approaching a withdrawal timetable.

Actually, you're missing the point that President Bush's discussions as noted in the news, is not news at all since there was no change in poicy or rhetoric.
