Second hand smoke,,, a danger ?

This study thinks not.

I don't think there has ever been "Died of second hand smoke" on a death certificate.

While its undoubtedly not healthy, I concur there is no danger from second hand smoke to people that happen to be near by. You won't get lung cancer if somebody at the table next to you is puffing away.

Sitting in traffic is probably more of a risk.

Two years ago, I went to Chicago for an Audi class. When I got back to O'Hare, I lit one up near the door before entering the terminal. Two ladies nearly sacked me and yelled: "Get behind the line !!!" - 15 foot minimum from the door. Being the polite gentleman that I am: "My apologies ladies. I didn't see the line, nor did I realize that it was going to be ME that kills you and not the 200 jets idling away on the other side of the building or the thousand cars right here."

I was not a chain smoker but in the last year, crept up to a pack a day. As of 5 weeks ago, I'm back down to 2 packs a week....

The jury is still out on this one....there are too many variables involved to nail it down to one specific thing. Case in point I have an uncle whom I affectionately call "Zorro" who chain smokes unfiltered Camels and has for the past 60 years. The VA thinks his lungs are bionic because when they went in to remove a mass from his lung there was no sign of cancer what so ever.

I hope not. If it is, I'd be a goner, because my dad smoked like a train. So did my mother. I had to start smoking just to filter out the air a little bit.

I had an aunt like that. Smoked 2-3 packs of some tobacco that might as well be the equivalent of grain alcohol til she was 89. She had a stroke at that point, then another 4 months later that she passed from. I smoked 2 cigs made with her tobacco in 45 minutes and I felt like I smoked a joint and had to lie down. I'm such a wus..

I tend to think that it's all the crap they put IN the tobacco that causes most cancer. I'm not saying that smoking isn't bad for you anyhow, but I think it's all the stuff they do to it that really causes problems.

How about if you're a bartender or waitress that has to work in a smoke filled dining room or bar during your career?

There was a time when they allowed smoking on airplanes- who remembers that?

My wife smoked pretty heavily back in the day when she was carrying the twins. Did not seem to affect them in any way and neither of them smoke today, or ever.

A few years ago there was a much-touted UN study on 2nd hand smoke. It was spiked because it did not link second hand smoke as a health hazard.
This is why I am skeptical about government-funded studies--If they do not further the current pet theory thay are spiked. I would rather have my research not produced to further some political agenda. Such studies are simply elaborate propaganda.
