Anyone have a Pinzgauer?

I saw one driving down the road on the weekend. I was surprised how small it was. I used to think it would be cool as a work truck, but I always thought they were huge like a Unimog or a H1 Hummer and would not be practical to use regularly. Maybe I will keep my eye out for one.

Does anyone have one or has driven one?

I drove one out on a farm a year or two ago. quite a rugged little machine and very easy to drive. Overall a great vehicle

They are small so that they can fit on the Austrian mountain roads. They can climb like moutain goats but are S L O W

The one I saw was not on the highway, but it was a country road and he was doing about 50 MPH. He seemed to have no problem keeping up with traffic. But then again, my truck only has 88HP

Do they come with a Diesel?

When I brought my '53 M37 Cargo Truck home, an MD neighbor with a fleet of Land Rovers came down the street and let me know he had a Pinzgauer stuffed away in an outbuilding. His is an '80s model and has a 4 cyl. turbo diesel. I don't know if this was the original engine, but doubt it. It looks to have been done by the Pimp my Truck crew, as it has DVD monitors and seats that look like they came out of a Lexus. He just uses it to haul kids around in (same as I do the M37), but I think it will go faster than 55--I have seen him on the Interstate with it before. I would love to have one at the hunting camp. We used to have an Argo six-wheeled vehicle, but they are chain driven and a PITA to keep running in the winter.

I'm scared to take my M37 above 45mph:eek:

When I was looking for MV's, I was choosing between a 'mog and a pinz. The pinz' are more modern but command about $3000 more than an equivalent 'mog. I also don't care for the funky drivetrain (but appearantly it works fine...) It has an exposed driveshaft and independant, camber changing suspension.

If I had the money, I'd get a Volvo C303 or 304 (4x4 or 6x6). It's virtually identical to the pinz but larger and has a 'mog like drivetrain. A guy I know restored one and it's awesome.

I just got back from a quick bike ride and noticed that the Pinzgauer (I haven't seen it in a couple of months) is now sporting a white and yellow striped awning/top/lid/whatever, ala, Fantasy Island. If it weren't for the snorkel and mean looking tires, I would swear it was a Disney ride.:D

There is an army surplus store in Gardena, CA that has a couple for sale.
