After many years, I flipped someone off.

I am very calm behind the wheel and I'm always looking out for other motorists. For example if I'm at a light and I see someone right behind me is trying to turn, i'll pull forward to let them by. Over many years I've been cut off, tailgated, nearly hit etc etc yet I have always kept my cool and never even flipped off another driver...until today.

(Other car is a Suzuki Esteem with a cracked windshield and a few dents)

Driving down a two lane highway, just cruising down the left lane at 65. After a small while this car comes up and tries to pass me on the right but never had the chance because he couldn't close the gab soon enough. He's behind me and there are cars on the right and someone on their cell phone crawling in the fast lane. I decide to be nice and when I got the chance I passed the car in front of me (because we all know that the cell phone caller wouldn't even move for an ambulance...)

So being nice I open the gap and let the Suzuki fly past and what to I see in the middle of the back of this car right next to an oversized ESTEEM badge.

A genuine....

MERCEDES-BENZ STAR!

I got completely pissed off by this and instantly flipped him off even though I know he couldn't see me. :liar:

I grabbed the wheel with both hands and hammered the throttle, diesel smoke came flying out and I was on him in a second. I didn't get stupid close but I was right on him all the way down the connecting on-ramp to route 2. He sped off at the end and continued swerving dangerously through traffic.

That being said...amazing that this is what finally broke my patience isn't it?

I try to avoid flipping people off. You never know it the person you flip off is going to come back shooting (or turn out to be a bigwig from corporate or something). I can't remember the last time I hoisted the single digit salute, though I've had it used on me a few times.

Haha, don't worry I've driven in New York City enough times to know....

My favorite was when I was trying to turn right at a stop sign in Queens. The traffic was moving past at a steady pace so I was waiting for an opening to pull out...for the guy behind me that wasn't fast enough. Flipped me off as he drove down the sidewalk between two parking meters and straight into traffic. He nearly got rear ended doing it.

I almost never flip anybody off in seriousness. I do my friends and even the Mrs. once in a while when they are making smart ass remarks. I often want to especially in cars but I really think its low class so I try very hard not to.

A couple of years ago we were in the Field Museum in Chicago waiting in line and a man even older than I got really pushy because we had the audacity to ask a question of the person directing the front of our line to the ticket sellers. It instantly hit my red button and I flipped him off as savagely as I could muster.

I still kindof chuckle at it when I remember it.

There in the genteel environment of the Field Museum along with a bunch of other nerdy history buffs.

A guy in an R129 cut me off once while I was driving mom's Caravan (I had just done a brake job on it... I hate freakin drum brakes ). I was in the fast lane with the cruise at 80, he was third in a line of people merging on. He cuts right to the fast lane, in front of me, to move around the "slow mergers". I lay on the horn, get close, then back off. He speeds up, I hit resume, change to the right lane, and continue.

Well then this guy slows down and follows me! He's right on my bumper for about 4 miles. Right before his exit he zips up beside me on the left, lays on his horn, and flips me off. I guess that's why people think Benz drivers are conceited I wish I had been driving my SDL at the time actually...

Although I have been tempted to do a brake check, I always resist because you never know, you could cause an accident in which totally innocent folks could get hurt, even killed.

It probably would be a further act of futility.

As an alternative to "flippin the bird" I've found, if possible, a steady stare with a head shake sends a message. Either that or a hands up WTF gesture.

I have learned to do nothing when offended on the road.
The jerks have always been with us and always will be with us. Some jerks learn and some dont.
By provoking jerks you are going to get a jerk reaction.
It's just best to stay clear of anything that can escalate the situation.
If you are fuming...they won.

Probably the wisest move to date!

Life's too short to have some road psycho retain a mental image of me retailating for whatever dim-witted move offended me...

I'm really very even tempered, but yesterday I see a guy coming out of Target and I'm passing in my car in front of Target and this guy starts running as I'm passing him to CROSS IN FRONT OF MY CAR! IDIOT! He stops when he sees that he has just almost got himself killed as I pass him. I stop, open my door and ask him why he is running in front of moving cars and that he's STUPID! I told him that I was going to report him to the security patrol in the shopping center. At first he looked like he was going to give me trouble... when he got a good look at me though, he thought better of it. I'm 6'3" 210lbs. pure muscle, mustache with goatee.

He got in his car and left. He knew I was watching him.
