Cleaning dog's ears

My dog's left ear is itching him quite a bit, so I took a look inside and it appears red and somewhat dirty. The other ear is normal.

My wife let him go swimming in a city lake yesterday, so that has something to do with it I'm sure.

We used to get a vet-prescribed cleanser for our dogs in the past, but in order to avoid a $300 vet bill, anyone know of a good/safe home remedy or an over the counter product?

TIA!

I use epi-optic. You should be able to get it OTC.. I think.

Swab them out with one of those round cotton wipes saturated with apple cider vinegar.

On horses, I used to shave the inside of their ears during the summer each time I roached mains (easier said than done....) and flush them with warm salt water in a squeeze bulb.

May have a tick.

We use some combination of alcohol, witch hazel and water, I think. Evan, we use acv for a lot of things, it's more than a vinegar at our house.

You do need to check for inflammation or infection first.

nstead of putting cleaning drops in the ear, use a cotton ball slightly saturated with the solution to swab out the ear canal.

We used to let our dogs swim in our pool two years ago untill our vet said that he wouldn't recommend it. He said dogs get water related ear infections real easy. Ours would get awful yeast infections in their ear canals that would require epi-optic cleaning and being treated with prescription med drops in their ears. Expensive for us and painful for them! We DON'T let them swim anymore! Not worth it for anyone.

We tried over-the-counter yeast infection medication (yes, for vaginal use) and it seemed to work, but you have to clean the ears first with epi-optic with a Q-tip, and then apply the paste deep inside the L-shaped canal with a Q-tip also everyday. Good Luck!

If the ears start to smell bad, it's a yeast infection, not a bacterial infection. If it's a bacterial infection, your dog will need anti-biotic pills from your vet. Ours did!

Thanks guys.

The affected ear does indeed smell. iirc, we had Labradors in the past which had a similar ear smell. We always used the vet ($$$$ cha-ching) prescribed tonic.

I'll try vinegar and H20, if it works on vaginas, should work on ears. Achemmm... dark, moist area.

They say it works but is not necessarily good for them. I'm not talking about ears here either.

My dogs have the same trouble here in S. Tx. All the vets. recommend using swimmer's ear drops a couple of times a week. It keeps the ears dry. Swimmer's ear is basically water and alcohol and a bit of vinegar. No need to get hi-tech.

.

One of my dogs kept getting dirty, smelly ears.

Found out he had ear mites.

Got some over the counter stuff and cleared it right up.
Don't remember what it was ?

My dog is in the lake every day. Every time he comes out, after he's dried off, I squirt a few drops of K-9 Liquid Health Ear Solutions Ear Cleaner in his ear. It's $12 or $15/12 oz, and contains a few key ingredients which will keep your dogs ears in good shape: Boric Acid, Isopropyl Alcohol, Gentian Violet and Colloidal Silver. The violet makes the solution purple, so be aware of the location where you let the dog shake after you squirt a few drops, put in a cotton ball and massage the ear.

Buster's ears are clean and dry all the time, but would be a mess if we didn't treat them. I tried a lot of other ear products prior to finding this one- it works great. I'm unassociated with the company and not selling it via MLM

I think you should keep distinctly separate sets of things to put in dog's ears and vaginas. Just saying...

vinegar and alcohol

The combo seemed to help the Goldens we had living at the lake. The vinegar gets the ear canal to an acid PH which kills the bugs. The alcohol drys out the water. Seems all floppy eared dogs are prone to this when they swim.
