MG Midget....

I am thinking about buying a small project car..... I have found a very inexpensive MG Midget thats cosmetically in good shape, and has a rebuilt motor and transmission. Its got pretty cool wire wheels, and new tires.... No rust anywhere, and is a good looking car....

What you guys think???? Should I pull the trigger and snap this up?

I love the older (early 70s and older) Midgets.

In my personal opinion, the later Midgets are to be avoided. It's been so long since I messed with Midgets, I don't remember the precise year they took a turn for the worse. At some point in the 70s the MG engines couldn't keep up with emissions standards, so they switched to engines and transmissions from the Triumph Spitfire. Others may disagree with me, but I wouldn't touch one of those later ones with a 10-foot pole.

A rust-free MG is a wonderful thing. I would go for it.

Its a 1979 MG Moneypit (err, I mean Midget.)....

Its looks to be a pretty cool little old car. Its red (oh dear, tickets...), and the paint just needs a goo buff for it to shine like new.

A rust free midget is an illusion.

Ha!

But, be very sure that there is no rust in the out-of-the-way places where it hides.

From your post, I take it that you have driven a Midget in the past. If not--check the fit--i.e. your fit. I don't fit. I sit with my head above the W/S header. But if you never take one out in the rain, or with the top erected, then, I guess it really doesn't matter.

The pre-BMC, BL, Rover cars is generally what's considered "true." Those ended around 1966. The 1.5L '79 was the last year of production and the car got the US black bumpers and jacked up the ride height.

I am still small enough to fit into one, although somewhat cramped. I have a leather helmet, and some goggles that I plan on wearing when I drive it... (Gotta complete that look.) I am going to look at it again tonight, and possibly finalize the deal....

Now you're talking. I think you will find the Sprite much more interesting than a 1979 Midget. By that time, federal smog and safety regs had turned MGs into a mess.

I was thinking the same thing. I had 2 MGA's from back in the day. A '59 that my grandfather had picked up in FL and brought up here to NJ. I took that to college and head on'd a tree with it. That car had little if any rust as I remember. I picked up a '62 MK II twin cam to replace it. A total rust bucket then (in '69)

As MS says, get that thing on a lift or on a curb and look it over carefully.

He said I can have it if I pull it out of his front yard. Hes got the title in hand, and said it needs to be gone! I think I am going to see if I can round up a car trailer and a truck to pull it....
