W126 gas mileage

Hey, Tonkovich,

My W126 was the 420SEL, a slightly smaller motor from 1986. I tended to get 19-20 overall, with a good deal of highway in the mix, when I lived in Denver, CO; and more like 17-18 overall with a lot of city in the mix when I came back below sea level to New Orleans. Mine required premium, too (weren't there some exceptions to that in the Benz lineup prior to 1986? People here will know).

But if it does require premium, you need to use it.

I seem to recall that I got about 24-25 highway (at about 60-65 mph) during the long trip back from Colorado. But the car was well loaded down: I was toting two suitcases, a back seat full of clothes, and Miss Linda's cat Marie-Antoinette in her carrier.

Im averaging a mixed mileage of 16mpg with the use of air conditioning in my 420sel. I swear though on a highway trip I got 24mpg-ish.

I noticed yesterday that my Lincoln is getting nearly 27 MPG lately. Of course nearly all my driving for the last few weeks has been highway and I've kept the cruise control on 70 most of the time.

I have no idea what the SEC gets. Maybe once I get the battery to quit dying I'll find out.

Best the 560SEC ever got in stock California emissions trim was 18 mpg highway. Usually around 12 mpg in crowded San Francisco conditions.

But, it was the flagship Mercedes Benz of its time, and so fuel consumption was never a worry to its first owners.

They drank a lot of that Persian Perrier, and you had to practically own an oil refinery to run one of them.

But, then, many owners of them DID.

Enrique will take very good care of you.

I am off to the shop right now to pick up my car, which just had the AMG headers, downpipes and two new catalytic converters put on it, and have been told it is now a TRUE dual exhaust, though smog legality in California may be now questionable.

When it is on the lift we will look at it and it will be explained exactly what was done. There was a LOT of custom fabrication apparently.

www.toplineautomobile.com is an ultra high line tuner that took on this job, very expensive but work of the highest quality, mostly late model Mercedes, Rolls royce, Maserati, BMW and Lamborghini tuning, but the owner has personally had three W126 cars and still owns 2, and the shop is very familiar with them and what they need.

Original hp was 238 for this (560SEC) car in California emissions trim.

The OEM new W126 Remus muffler I found in Manhattan that I put on it earlier in the year at this shop, guarantees an extra 2+ hp on the dyno.

These new AMG headers should put another 215 hp directrly to the rear wheels.

So: about another 27 hp in the car now makes 265 hp =/-

What all this will sound like, perform, like and increase or decrease MPG remains to be seen....

Maybe in a month or less I will know the answers definitively.

so this (your modifications) is for performance, gas mileage and of course, more fun behind the wheel - of course btw must say that the w108 (69 280s)i had still seems like it was a better handling car than the w126 - don't know why? lower to ground, heavier, certainly not weight distribution? and also will say that stick seems to give more "feel" for driving and affected steering (in a good way) maybe because auto trans means drive wheels always engaged? just a question? theory? of mine - ok i'll stop rambling
