I was in the attic this morning looking for some boats parts I stored away a bunch of years ago. It's kinda dark up there and I was searching around with a flashlight when I spotted something wedged between the floorboards and the roof rafters. Too my surprise, it was an old rife. I never saw it before and it must have come with the house. I don't know much about guns, but it looks like an old WW2 rifle.

The only markings on it are : STEYR M.95. I know many here are very knowledgable on the subject and hoped someone can enlighten me on some specifics. I attached a few pictures below.

I did a search and found a couple web sites that talk about it, such as:

What you have appears to be a Steyr-Mannlicher Model 1895 rifle or carbine (can't tell from your pics). It may be chambered in either 8x50 or 8x56 mm. As the name implies, it's a late 19th century design, though the rifles continued to be used through WWII.

Yikes, I had one that was rechambered in the 8x56, and cut down to a short carbine. That SOB kicked so badly that I put 5 rounds down the pipe and gave up. The ammo is obsolete and all if it that I had had Nazi headstamps, and was dated 1936 as I recall. I sold the gun, but seem to recall that it only feeds from sheetmetal clips, not single shot.

While 8mm is a fairly large rifle round, it is much smaller than a .44.

I think I still have some ammo, in tidy little brown cardboard boxes with red stenciling on the box, and 2 clips of 5 rounds inside. The Germans were tidy and orderly if nothing else. The 8x50 and 8x56 were Austro-Hungarian designs, but the Germans wound up using some of these weapons in back-line service in WW2, prison guards and the like, who didn't need to be standardized with the 7.92x57 Mauser cartridge.

Steyr built some, and a Hungarian plant made some too, I think that plant is called FEG now, and they make some neat handguns there.

That was over holland site refers to the turnbolt Dutch M1895, which is a different animal altogether. It was chambered for the little 6.5x53r, and some got recut for .303 Btitish and had pseudo-flash-supressors added. I had one of those too, and it is a MUCH eaasier weapon to handle and fire than the straight-pull bolt on the Austro Hungarian weapon.

I have an 8mm bullet that weighs 220 gr. and a .44 round that weighs 246 gr. Not that big a difference.

Thats a nice old rifle, the local gun store sells lots of them for $100 each +/- $50 depending on the condition.

I'd clean it up and take it to the range.

I think a lot of them come from warehouses in old Eastern block countries.


What year was this house built, and who were the PO's? Could this have just been a cheap sporting rifle bought sometime in the past 100 years or a WW1 keepsake?

Edit: I presume you pulled the bolt back to make sure its not loaded? Right?

Steyr M95 was originally produced in Vienna and Budapest for the army of the Austro-Hungarian empire. After WWI they continued in production at the respective arsenals for the Austrian and Hungarian armies respectively. Are you sure there are absolutely no other markings on the rifle besides Steyr and M95? No date stamp anywhere? Crown or city name etc? I collect old military surplus rifles so if you don't want this one feel free to send it on down my way. It'd find an appreciative home amongst my Mausers, Mosins, Enfilelds and Schmidt Rubin
