Interesting ... I never really thought about how drought conditions can play a part in duck population.

It seems like things are doing OK considering all the land that appears to be eaten up with development every year.

You hunt ducks don't you? Does this report help you get a read on the potential success of the hunting season?

Sorry for a kind of hi-jack Bot, but your link took me to an Adobe program, and every time I see the word Adobe, I freak out. Adobe freezes my computer up EVERY time. I end up pulling the plug and unloading the battery to get it straightened around. Anyone else ever see this ?

It means little to nothing as far as individual success. That has more to do with land/crop management and presence of water along the flyway. What it has a EVERYTHING to do with, is the dates the powers that be will set as 'duck season' and the bag limits.

I have found that buying a new shotgun drives waterfowl away.

Conversely, waterfowl are attracted by seeing me prop my blaster, stand-up and take a leak.

Being that I've only been hunting when I was kid, I always thought hunting seasons were the same time every year. ... except for when a population boom occurs like when they call for a deer culling.

Has there ever been a year when there was no hunting season issued?

I don't recall a moratorium in my hunting days, but the limits have changed drastically and of course, eliminating lead shot was a biggie.

Where I hunt, we are down to a 60 day total season, not including teal, which is only a total of 3 weeks.

However, there was a ten-year moratorium on rockfish (stripped bass) and oyster harvesting on the Chesapeake Bay that ended several years ago.

edit: and the duck and other migratory species harvest seasons 'float' due to the nature of the fact that they are, well, migratory the 'officials' take into consideration the pothole population count like Bot listed, plus the frost situation in the breeding grounds and try to lay out the seasons according to where the birds will be at a given time. They need to make the damn season about thirty days later because the ducks don't get here until Feb!!

Rather like the purchase of a new telescope will ensure clouds for weeks on end.
