I remember when we'd go downtown to the department stores and just sign the receipt for things. They knew who we were and where to send the bill. Everybody greeted you by name on the street, and there actually WAS a downtown with stores and shoppers in it. That was before the retail invention known as "the mall" had arrived in our little Southern town.

We've got a milkman in our neighborhood, at least two different versions of ice cream vendors (anglo and mexican) and I still have rabbit ears on my TV.

Yep, you got that right! I loved my Stingray bike! I rode it everywhere! All over Santa Barbara Ca.! It was safe then! My mom never worried. I had a "transistor radio" on my handlebars that I would listen to the Doors and Steppenwolf and Deep Purple. I had alot of fun! California Dreamin...

I remember watching:
The Senators at Griffith Stadium (First in War, First in Peace and last in the American League)
The Mets at the Polo Grounds. (Can't anybody here play this game?)
The Phillies at Connie Mack Stadium.
The Celtics at the Boston Garden (North Station).

Yeah, I know, I'm old.

Then there was

Gasoline at $.30 a gallon.
Cigarettes at $.35 a pack
Evening newspapers.
Paperboys. (was one..Wash. Post & Evening Star)
Soda fountains in Drugstores and 5&10 cent stores.
Burma Shave signs.
White Bucks.
Horn & Hardarts.
NEHI soda.

Gas stations with "full service". That meant the attendant filled up the car for you, checked your oil, and cleaned your window. All gas staions used to be ONLY full service!

We in NJ are one of the last of the "Attendant only" states. There's no such thing as full service anymore, at least not around here. You can get a quart of oil and maybe a gallon of anti-freeze at most sttations, but that's pretty much it. Check your oil? Pffft

I remember going to school on my bike and not having to lock it up.

Having fun in class and learn at the same time. In the third grade we raised chickens and ducks from eggs and entered them into the fair.

Toys that were made with some quality. Only some Tonka Trucks are made out of metal today. I miss my Tonka Truck, if I had one now I would be out in my backyard playing with it man...

saturday morning cartoons that didnt suck.

Watching cartoons from before my time in the morning(stupid parent watch groups)

The first time I ever stopped for gas in Fort Lee, NJ I was shocked that there was no self service gas. Not only that, but the gas was cheaper than it was in Virginia!

Our state gas tax is one of the lowest in the country, for now. Also, we are not too far from Del. River refineries in SJ and I guess they have refineries up near Linden & Rahway in NNJ. Not to expensive to get to the retailers in NJ.

The Gas. Retailers Assn. has been lobbying for years to go self serve, but the politicians in the legislature fear voter wrath so it never gets passed. Personally, I pay cash for gas and hate the treckin in to pay, either before or after gassin in self serve states.
