porsche 911 experts out there? question

My SIL has a 74 911. Today we started to put the engine and tranny back into it and we are wondering if its better to install the tranny before the engine or put them together and install them together?

We are also need ing torque specs for the pressure plate.

I think it is easier to bolt the eng/trans together and install as an ass'y.

Clutch attachment torque for a 901 is around 18lbs and 21lbs for the eng/trans bolts

Is it a 901 or 915 gearbox?

Assemble, then install as a unit.

Maybe a 915 in '74. I think that was about the time they all got the 915.

I'll afvise accordingly. After looking it over it looked to me like that was the way to go.

I am impressed with the clever engineering in the 911.

Totally different than a benz but very high quality.

Dr. Porsche started out working for . . . you guess it! His designs were the basis for early Mercedes sports models before WWII.

The porsche show was pretty cool. The outstanding car there was an original 904. I spent about a half hour talking with the owner who bought it as a wreck and spent about ten years restoring it. It looks so good I thought it must be a replica.

The second coolest car was a speedster carrerra with the four cam engine.

Oh yeah next to the 904 was one of those new supercars like leno and seinfield have (what is it a carrerra rs?) in a hot orange color. They're cool but they don't interest me much.

It got me thinking about buying an old 911 or 912.
