composting and composting dog crap

Anyone into composting? I finished construction on my homemade spinning composter this weekend- I'm pretty happy with it so far. It joins the earthboxes in the garden.

I just got a little activated carbon-filtered stainless pail for the kitchen so that we don't have to go outside after every meal, which I think will improve upon frequency of collecting composting things that should be composted.

I have been looking at BioBags, which I'd like to employ in a dog-crap composter which I'm still designing. There is a commercially available one called the doggie doolie http://www.doggiedooley.com/ which I think I can improve upon, and I think if I use the biobags it should still work. Anyone tried a dog crap composter?

If you're not familiar with BioBags, they seem pretty neat- made of vegetable starches- shelf stable but guaranteed to break down about the same as an apple. The Boloco burrito joint in my building uses cornstarch cups for cold items; they're completely compostable as well... We'll see- I've got a half dozen of them in my new tumbler.

I didn't think you were supposed to use the "by-products" of carnivores for compost/planting...

When composting animal waste, the closer the relationship between the producer (that which poops) and the consumer (that which uses the poop), the higher the sterilizing temp and the longer that temp should be maintained. Thus, sterilizing night soil (human waste) requires composting for the longest time and highest temps.

I won't be using the dog crap in the normal composter- rather, I'm working on one that is specifically (only) for dog doo. Meat waste (my dog's food is grain-free) isn't a good thing to add to the compost.

The normal composter is looking good so far-

As far as the dog doo, I don't think anyone has figured out how to do this on any large scale. I would stay away from it personally.

As far as regular compost piles, my favorite is get about 10' of 3' or 4' wide fencing, the kind with the wires welded every 2" one way and 4" the other way. Just put that into a circle and you have a nice 1yd compost pile (+-). Cheap and light weight and works very well.

My Dad had a compost-barrel when i was a kid. it was a 55 gallon drum with a door cut in the bottom. and a lid for the top. we put just about every thing in there. The land the house i grew up in was built on was volcanic clay. so nothing grew. when i was really young my dad and i would go to his friends ranches and clean out the stalls for manure. and till that into the soil. after a few years of regular manure deposits, and compost from the barrel we had the best garden on the block. we could grow just about anything.

my dad would toss the dog poop into the barrel and when he was doing the bi-yearly manure rototill he would till it straight into the ground.

I do remember he would only scoop the compost out of the bottom of the barrel during his bi-yearly manure rototill. so maybe the large volume of the barrel combined with the long period of time broke down the poo.

We also had a bucket in the kitchen for the compost. what really works good for a kitchen bucket is one of those plastic gallon ice cream buckets. they are just the right size so you only have to empty them twice a week and they have a lid so nothing gets really stinky.
