not happy with new laptop

ohhh am I mad...

I had an issue this morning where Vista would not work at all. Nothing would load and it kept hanging. So I try and use dells online tech support chat. I enter in my service tag number and it says I do not have a warranty, however, my invoice(both of them, the one that came on the box and the one they mailed me) both say 1 year limited , 24x7 technical support, mail in service and some other stuff.

I've been either on hold or call dropped by dell's bangledash call center

Thanks for the warning, Joe. I'll be sure to avoid Dell. I've heard that their quality isn't what it used to be. Sounds like that may be the case. I'm sorry you're having trouble.

Blah, first thing I do with any computer I get is wipe it out and put the OS and software I want on it...

in our office we spec them with XP Pro. Any that come with Vista get wiped and rebuilt pronto. We are hoping to bypass Vista completely and go directly to the next (hopefully bettre) OS. Heck, we probably still have 100 computers running Win2k. We are trying to get all of them upgraded. Oh and our MACs give us no end of trouble. We bought 5 IMACs in one month and 4 had to go back to Apple for parts/rebuild. One went several times.

Ditto on all of our PC's and laptops (although not in the hundreds). They keep plugging away.

Sorry to hear your having issues, Joe. Kind of surprised to hear you didn't go the Mac route.

Assume you kept the call report number. Call Dell back, refer to this number and it will bring up your problem. Ask them to elevate this to a higher level for resolution. I have had the same problem but finally got it resolved. Seems like there were two numbers on the back of my laptop - one was maybe a service tag number and do not remember what the other number was. Anyway they never were able to find me with the service tag number. After giving them more information, they finally found that I was covered and gave me the help I needed.

Good luck.

well, the did fix the issue.. I don't know why they screwed up.

I wanted a mac but I didn't have the money for it due to my bush bucks never coming or me never getting them. I need to get to the IRS office and kick some ass.. but I've been very busy

I think I read somewhere the other day that Microsoft will no longer allow manufacturers to sell computers with the XP/XP Pro OS on them.

I believe that is true, technically. But if you purchase Windows Vista Business, you can downgrade to XP Pro.

But you have to do the downgrade.

Interesting. I'm still running Win98 on a computer some friends helped me build in 2000. I've been thinking about getting something newer.

You can't really blame Dell. They basically only supply the hardware, so tech support really won't get you anywhere. It's Microsoft's fault that Windows sucks. Vista is the worst version yet. Dell is great because if you don't like Vista, they are (to my knowledge) the only major computer vendor who actually supplies XP drivers for their new computers. Might be time to consider switching to GNU/Linux.

Send it back. Dell has a 21 day return policy. Dump it and get a Lenovo or HP. Better support and better machine.
