Linksys WRT54g V6 VPN issue - PeachParts Mercedes-Benz Forum

I'm banging my head against the wall dealing with a VPN issue, does anyone here know what ports to open to cure the dreaded error 619 issue? I have connected with no problems when connected directly through the modem butI cannot connect behind the router. My connection to the ISP is DHCP, vpn is enabled along with everything else.

I miss my bricked 54gl

You familiar with Hamachi?

It's no enterprise solution, but for remote access for an individual or two, it's far easier to setup than a "classic" VPN. It's also OS agnostic, unlike most VPN agents.

The VPN for M$ enterprise server is a piece of cake but if I don't find a solution for this router I'll give it a try.

Or get a VPN friendly router.

Most low end routers like the WRT54G will allow "VPN passthrough"....so you can supposedly do a client approach through the router, but how well this works I am not sure. I tried to set up a WindowsServer 2003 VPN over our Linksys BEFSR41 V3.0 and it did not work right at all....sooo.... I am soon setting up a Netgear FVS336G Firewall/VPN/Router unit on our network to allow for a good VPN setup...as well as having a reliable unit at the front of the network, the o'l linksys was a bad choice. This unit will run the whole VPN by itself, no need for a whole windows server to perform the task less securely.

Of course a good router also costs money....expect to pay $150+ for a reliable VPN router....Netgear makes a smaller cousin to the one I am using that would likely do a good job.

I am done using the consumer grade equipment due to all of its reliability issues and short lifespans.....business class is the way to go!

Thats one of the reasons I switched to using RRAS in Win2003 as my router, the VPN, and the fact that I kept overheating them for some reason...

I tried setting up one of my servers with 2003 to be a router, but I absolutely could not get it to open up ports to the outside that would allow my web server traffic from another system on the network out/be accessible. I spent hours at it but never got it to work. The idea was that the windows server would be our router, dhcp server, vpn server, and traffic monitor.....I had all of it working great, just couldn't get the outside (ISP) IP address to reach our webserver on the internal network....I had the ports open on the firewall and the IP address of the webserver all entered in and forwarded, but it wouldn't work. Oddly, I had our mail server stuff entered in the same way, and it DID work. Explain that one?

None of it will be an issue now anyways since we're going with the Unimog of self contained units (The Netgear)....but still....I'd like to know what the deal was with port forwarding in Windows Server! The ShieldsUp! site would say every single port was in stealth, even when I had opened them up in the windows firewall.

The Netgear unit will be more reliable, more secure, use less power, and be easier to configure than windows server for the things I need it to do...so thats a big advantage.
