Wow, no wonder the Chollos get pissed off when I refer to them as Hispanic, I guess they have been re branded as Latinos, I must have missed that memo.

I wonder what would happen if we just dropped this race ID crap and looked at each other as people? With the energy wasted on this matter over the years, we probably could have driven a fleet of Ford Focus's to the moon and back.

Pardon my rant, but I don't know what nationality I am, nor do I care. My father was illiigitiment (sp), all I know is, that my mother was Irish.

I mean, come on - we're the only group left for whom it's acceptable to refer to by color. And Caucasian? Sorry, but I'm putting my foot down there, too. Sounds way too much like something that gets erect on a...hmmm.

Sorry, what's the correct term?
Euro-American is too general. I'm a Celto-Pictish-American, by golly.

Absolutely. Asia is a really big place with a whole lot of people wandering around that have been genetically isolated from each other until the recent few thousand years.

In reference to former western Asians who migrated west to a new continent, I refer to them as Honk-American.

When did the term 'Oriental' as a reference to people become widely seen as a derogatory term?
Not at all.

So you consider it offensive but don't know why? Sounds logical.

India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan are not Middle East, they are east. Agreed on the larger point that they get excluded from 'Asian' even though they are.

If we look at the land mass rather than the cultures, there is one huge land mass we might call "Eurasia". Inhabitants are Eurasians. Making inhabitants of Eurasian extraction living in American a sort of maybe .. Eu-American.

I guess some people can't recognize the contextual difference between the various usages of the term.

Almost as logical as you having a valid opinion on offensive racial terms, given your favorite three letter word.

That's probably most of it right there.

It reminds me of my Dad explaining to me that in the part of Texas where he lived as a boy there were very few black people and they were well employed as laborers and clerks and such. He never heard jokes about black people nor derogatory remarks. Now Mexicans, they were the recipients of contemptuous treatment. Back in the 1960's he and I compared jokes -- his Mexicans vs my Coloreds. They were nearly identical except for the ethnicity thing. Later I heard Italian and Polish jokes. Same deal.
I'll bet somewhere in Africa and in Asia folks tell honkie jokes indistinguishable from the jokes my my childhood and of my Dad.

"Didja hear the one about these 3 honkies ...?"

What's your point? That I am being offensive by shortening the word Japanese to Jap? If I had called them "slant eyes" you could say that. Got anything else that backs up your theory?

Yes.

Feel free to query those of Japanese descent, to verify the level of your ignorance.

Wasn't deliberate. Oh Look here. http://www.rsdb.org/search?q=Japanese&sort=slur

Jap (1) Japanese Short for Japanese.

So sorry I didn't check by database of racial slurs before I typed it. What next, someone going to get offended by me shortening the car or ship name Corvette to Vette?

Nor was it several years back, when I referred to a Honda as a "you-know-what" bike, in front of my brother's Japanese wife and her family.

Let's just say, my education on the term was far more painful than being told by some unknown stranger in an Internet forum. The hurt on her face and that of her family, and the long conversation that ensued, was a lesson well learned.
