I'm looking at going to school.




I HAVE to get out of tool and die. 4 years of machine work and I already feel like hurling myself off a cliff.


How's this industry?

I thought it was good there for a while...until the airlines started cutting back on the amount of flights.
Still...it wouldn't hurt to check the on-line job sites.

Ever given any thought to joining the Air National Guard? You can pick any number of aircraft maintenance specialties and let them put you through school, then do your A&P license through your unit. Several guys at my unit have done so. It's a cheap way to go about getting your license, though it can take a little while to accomplish... plus you get paid (a bit, anyway) while doing it. Just a thought!

Is there a "bootcamp" associated with this?


I wont be able to make it through. I have BHJS in every major joint (so much so, I cant even do push-ups)

Yep, that would be a problem. You might inquire about civilian technician slots within the military, though I think those will all require experience. I'm not privy to any of those specifics, I am afraid; sorry!

I'm not in that particular business myself, but I know a few guys who work for Boeing. They all got their start in the Navy.

You might look into Embry-Riddle.

That’s where I got my A&P license, as well as a few of my degrees.
Not the cheapest route by any means. But, arguably the best.

If you’re really serious about it. And with today’s ever-tightening industry.
It may be nice to have that name associated with your ticket(s).

This school is going to be over 20k for a year and a half full-time...


I need a job that's mechanical (keep my hands busy) and isnt machine work/tool&die (both industries are dead...)

I went to auto mech school for a couple of years, got tired of fixing rusty junk and went off to Northrop University to get an A&P license. They had some reputation for being demanding and it was a challenge but interesting every day. Met alot of guys working on their second career. Northrop is gone now, don't know if its buyer is any good. Embry Riddle had a good reputation then, still does now. I worked hard for decent grades, got called in for an interview with a place that had hired Northrop grads before. Twenty four years later I still haven't fixed a plane. Some of my stuff is orbiting earth, some is in the Indian Ocean,(oops), some is in a junkyard on Mars, (dang it!). The name on the degree will open doors for years to come.
