My 92 300E vs ML320

I have a local individual who is serious about purchasing my 92 300E w124 when I make that decision. I'm considering a 2001-2005 ML320 as the replacement. However, when scanning the MB Forums regarding the problems with various ML320s I may reconsider my thinking. Would it be safe to say that if the original owner of an ML follows factory recommended servicing chances are you will get a good vehicle?
My 300E has 110k miles and I am the second owner. Since taking ownership in 2000 I've had all major items replacements ie,. retrofited R134a A/C, radiator, water pump, new mufflers, brake pads, front rotors. With the exception of a few parking lot dings this vehicle is in immaculate condition.
I haven't been able to arrive at a selling price. I need suggestions.

If nothing has been done to your valves yet you've got about a $1500 minimum $4000 max valve job coming up on the 300E. You may get away with seals at best, new valves at worse. I don't think you could get more than $5k for it as is.

300Es are going for $3K or less these days unless really pristine or super low miles. Only the cabriolets and CE series have more value.

I hung onto my 300E (even with the 99 ML320 approaching 100K). Despite the gasket and other assorted stuff (still need to do the tranny swap), I wouldn't get rid of the cheapest-running car in the fleet. An '07 ML350 eventually replaced the W163...WOW what a difference!

Most of the W163 anomalies were worked out by '02 or '03 I believe. Biggest difference between those and the pre '00 models were the interior quality...'98 and '99 interiors were very "plastic" looking. Otherwise, my '99 really didn't complain much during my ownership...and it still looked damn good when I took it in to trade up!

I May Reconsider

Having done more research on ML320s I'm beginning to have second thoughts about selling my 300E. One would think that MB could of designed a V6 that would produce better mpg. With the price of premium gas I don't need a vehicle that will break you at the pump. Aside from that I'd like to have another SUV.

I'd keep the 300E. Former Mercedes Service Advisor 2000 to 2004.

I second that.

I have had my '92 300e for 8 years and serviced it since 1995.
2nd owner. Now at 180,000 miles.

It's a keeper.

This was a $52k car new ! My last tag was $48 and insurance is $180.00 a year.

I fixed the a/c by screwing shut the recirc' door.

Did a head gasket in 2004.(?)

Run Shell Rotella 5W40. Used about a quart in last 8000 miles.

Coolant is Evan's.

No radiator fan.

4 New tyres in 2006 for $200.00...CONPU.

To Florida and back gets 25.6 mpg on 89 with a/c running .

Just wish it was a wagon.:tank:
