unless you have a police vehicle with a certified speedometer it will always read high, this keeps you under the limit.i can drive by those trailers at 35 and my 86 sdl,96 bmw740il,2000 jetta tdi,92 chevy pickup and 92 suburban all read about 3 mph fast.but my 2000 bmw rt-p,x california highway patrol bike(certified speedo) reads dead on.

This is true on my Ford pickup but the Benz and the Corvette are dead nuts on.

Remember: "radar does not lie, but it doesn't always understand the question". Those boxes are just putting out a (fairly wide) radar beam and watching whatever comes back. Generally, it is going to display the BEST reflected signal. You at 500 yards distance might be doing 35. The semi with 60,000 lbs of steal coil 500 yards behind you might be doing 50. The question becomes, "who has the best radar profile?"
Threy have put a bunch of those radar signs on the expressway that is my daily route. Sometimes they "see" me, sometimes they don't. I pretty much have to be in the sweet spot with no other cars or trucks anywhere near for them to see either of my 126s

The ones I have seen in NY and MD are usually about 3 to 5 mph HIGH. They will say 35 when the speedo and GPS say 30. I figure they set them high to getyou to slow down.

The speedos in both the SDL and the Suburban are dead on with the GPS.
I still need to check out the BMW

I sugesst getting a GPS and checking it at different speeds to see how accurate your speedo is.

I was sitting at a red light facing a radar trailer, yesterday. No cross traffic, just waiting for the light to change. The radar trailer's display indicated that I was sitting still at 22 mph! As soon as the light changed, and I began to move, the speed indicated what my speedo said.

Back in the late 80's or early 90's, someone contested a speeding ticket in Florida. The judge had a test run. The radar gun clocked an Oak tree doing like 88 mph. Turned out the gun was picking up the fan blades on the car's air conditioning. The judge threw out like over 1000 tickets that had come thru his court and made the state refund the fines people had paid. My boss was one of the people to get a refund. It doesn't lie, it just doesn't always understand the question.

Very true. The ones I come across are all innacurate. I initially thought it was my car as I have always had old cars, and my handheld gps was showing differently than my speedometer also. Since I pulled an instrument cluster from a newer 420sel and verified it against the gps and Ml320, I believe the radar trailers are wrong.

Well, I did a GPS check today and I was about 1.5 mph off, so overall, the radar trailer was almost dead on (around 2 mph off)

Unfortunately when I popped the speedo needle off I lost where it was positioned, so I may have to go through this bs again...blah. I made a tool though, so that the windy spring thing that the needle attaches to will stay in place as i pop it off...just a paper clip turned into a rod with a very sharp, flat bent tip that will go into the little opening on the spring.

1.5 mph off wasnt so bad, I should have left it.
