anyone cut an iPod in half?

I'm looking into better integration of an iPod with my car stereo. It would be super if I could have the display at eye level and the controls on the center console. Sadly even the best iPod controlling decks are far from my line of sight in a W124, and the controls aren't a comfortable reach from my preferred driving position.

So how about it, any good FAQs on splitting an iPod? I haven't found anything dumbed down to my level of understanding.

Thanks,
Sixto

I have opened a Gen IV 20 GB Ipod.

You can split them open by inserting a knife very carefully in the seam.

There are tabs you need to disengage four on each side two on the top and bottom.

The thing is, the screen is connected by a very short ribbon cable to the motherboard as is the hard drive. I don't think splitting it open is going to do you any good.

Here is a good resource

Unless you can make yourself a replacement cable that is longer.... good luck with that one.

With enough work, you can build your own version of the BMW i-Drive.

It'd probably be easier to buy an existing system and adapt it to the car.

Long ago I considered going all digital in my car with a car PC system, scrapped that idea quick when I saw the endless amount of work it would take.....
