Want to donate an old "bank" barn
 

Does anyone have contact info for non-private charitable organizations that I can donate an old barn to? I have a "bank" barn that was constructed in 1847-9 and would like to donate it and use the value as a tax deduction. Leads would be appreciated.

Another option would be to contact a recycled lumber company and see what they would pay you to be able to disassemble it and resell the period lumber.

Here in Texas it is difficult to donate such things (we are trying that now). Most institutions will not accept buildings unless they have an accompanying trust fund whose interest will pay for the upkeep and taxes.

If the municipality has an existing 'historical district' , such as one to which we are trying to donate an old house, then they can apply for various grants that will pay for the restoration, etc.

Gets very complicated. If you have a city that might want your barn, see if you can find a grant writer. They know all about grants, where to find them, and how to write an application.

Thank you all for your input. Each provides me with additional insight. I will contact the two provided historic preservation references. As to the recycling concept, one typically does better, when possible, to find a donating to a qualified charitable trust/organization. In my situation, I really could benefit from the income tax relief. Though the limit is 30% of adjusted gross (first year) with a possibility of carry overs, it would certainly offset some of a nearly $100k tax liability.

The more leads and contacts the better my chances will be.
