Truck question...

Kind of thinking about a Dodge 2500 with the Cummins.

Two questions, what years are good?

What should you spend to get a decent one? I don't want a 150k mile clapped out special. 50k-80k miles, and clean. No contractor trucks, no 5th wheels, no plows, etc.

I'd prefer a standard cab, 8ft bed, 4wd. I wouldn't get one without an 8ft bed because its going to be a work truck, and thats what you need for plywood and dry wall. I could live without 4wd around here, I'd take an auto over 4wd actualy.

Their seems to be a lot of truck guys on this forum, just want to know a bit about them. I won't be buying anything until I get out of school next spring.

Lots of quad cabs which I could live without. When I get serious I'll go to the dealer auctions with my friend. You can get better deals at wholesale.

I don’t want to guess about what a good price for one in CT is.

I will say however, that you may wish to avoid, or at least do some research on, the Cummins engines with the VP44 injection pumps. I’m not sure exactly, but I think they were 98-02ish.

Here’s a start: http://www.bluechipdiesel.com/injectionpumpfailures.html

the vp-44 were 98.5 up.if you want simplicity go for a 97-98.5 12 valve.but you will have 2 problems.1 you will not find one near the miles your looking for and 2 most got used for 5th wheel pulling.avoid the autos they are the weak point right after the front ends.

I want something newer, like that 2005.

My other choice would be an F150 up to 1996. Because I love the body style and I6.

Depends on what I want to spend. Its going to be a work truck so I don't want to be fixing it.

Holy crap, your looking at the same trucks I am...

I have been in the market for a newer car, and have been eyeing different 2002-2005 Rams. Friends at the dealer tell me the 02-03 are the best years for them..... Locally, 2003 2500 Cummins sell for about 8k-16k depending on condition and miles.

Thing is I think I am going to cheap out and get like an 03 Ram 1500.... Gas really isnt all that bad in those things, and they look pretty good.... Not to mention it can still pull my big boat...

(Sorry for going OT, but you you know anything about Chris Craft boats? My dads been looking at some Chris Craft Corsair...)

I know a bit, what year Chris?

I'm not a big truck fan, and honestly I think Dodge's are POS. I'd prefer a Chevy. But I really would like a diesel so it gets better than 10mpg, and can work a bit. The Cummins is hands down the best on the market. But I could be talked into a Chevy 2500, and I will look at them. If I get a truck it will just be for work, so I don't really want or care about leather, quad cab etc. AC is nice, and I really would like 4wd, thats nice sometimes, but other than that I want an 8ft bed. I'm going to stick "Southern New England Land Company" on the side and get my moneys worth out of it.

My friend has a 1999 Dodge 1500, forget the engine but its the big V8. Has 95k miles on it, engine replaced at 60k, trans done last year. Trucks a POS. Its a quad cab with tons of options, gets 10.5-11mpg.

I drove a $50k Dodge 2500 last year loaded with the Cummins. Had a freaken plastic action man interior!

I think its a 2004, although I am not sure.

Chevys are crap, they die.... ALOT. They die so frequently, there is one sitting broken down on the street in front of my office....

I think I am going to stick with a Dodge. I am thinking an 03 with the Hemi would be a sweet truck.

IMHO:

Best bets:

Dodge - '03 to '06. Has the CRD, awsome running engine.

Chevy - Pretty much any Duramax after about '01 due to some early head gasket problems. My only gripe is that the frame is only like, 11" off the deck!

Ford - Late '99 to late '00 for 7.3's, '05-'06 for 6.0.

Automatics are historically weak in all brands except for the Allison and the Torque shift on the Ford 6.0's.

As stated, the 24v dodges with the VP44 have been known to fail and have lift pump problems.

Now, these are just my experiences. Of course, there will always be someone who jumps up and says "I never had any trouble with blah, blah, blah..." You know the story.

And, oh yeah, I would NEVER have another truck without 4WD, they suck out loud on snow.

That's a nice truck. Comes with a snow blade too! I made a few bucks back in school plowing snow in Ohio.

I don't like the new Fords either. My dads friend has a long bed Ford with a super crew cab. Damn thats a long truck, to big!

I'd prefer a standard cab with 8ft bed.
