recharging r134a (DIY)
Is it difficult to do?
My 88TE was switched over to r134a. If I buy a kit + refridg. can I do it myself and if so, what are the steps involved/anything I need to know? Is it simply plug in, turn on engine, crank AC to full until can is empty? Much appreciated

It's really not that simple. You have a recipe for air in your system, plus a chance of overcharging.

If you can read and follow the directions precisely, go for it. Just buy the kit that comes with a pressure gauge, obtain the factory pressure specs. and don't overfill. If your a bumbling idiot and can't figure out where the hood release is, let someone else do it.

Be sure to purge air from the hose and fitting before you put it into the system.
And there are two types of systems, CCOT as used in most American cars, and TXV as is used in many European cars. We have TXV, and the directions of the kit will assume that you have CCOT. You really should have two pressure gauges (low and high side) for either system, though. |

you will need to pull a deep vacumm as well. there is more than likley moisture in the system that needs boiled out. i would completely open the system flush all of the old oil out(possibly mineral if it was done incorrectly) replace any orings that you undid and replace the filter/drier

You have to pull a vac fro at least 45 minutes. When you charge multiply the r-12 spec by .8 to obtain the correct 134 charge

The low side is on the right hand side of the engine bay with the blue cap correct?
