Lasik surgery: how are your results?
Had the surgery two weeks ago. I had a pretty strong prescription to begin with, as well as an astigmatism in both eyes, particularly strong in the left eye.
I'm pretty happy with the results, but would like to know others' experiences with the post-operative recovery. I still have very noticable "fog" around bright objects, which is especially noticable at night when the pupils are more dialated. The prescription itself is a little over corrected, which I've been told, should even out in a while. Also, the astigmatism is still present in the left eye. Does anyone have any experience with these symptoms, and how long did it take before the fogginess went away? Thanks!

I had it done 3 years ago. I am really happy with the results. The fog around the lights I had was minimal. If I remember is was quite a while before it totally went away and it was gradual, I'm thinking 6-8 weeks. As I'm sure you know, just keep pouring the drops in and wear good sunglasses. I still use the drops from time to time but more for general comfort.
I don't know how old you are but in my case, I had to wear glasses to see distance for 33 years. BIG adjustment. Good luck

I just had my eyes done a couple months ago. Best money I ever spent! I ended up with better than 20/20. The "halos" will fade over the next month or so. Enjoy your new vision!!
Here's the thread on my surgery... My Eyeballs Were Smoking!!! Literally!!!

Howdy Stefano,
I had mine done a few years back. One eye was 20/800 and the bad eye was 20/ worst. I had a free touch-up a year later. Now they only offer free touch-ups within 6 months. I'm about 20/40 now , so I will have it done again. The big thing that I noticed when I had it done was the brightness of colors.

Stefano,
I have astigmatism as well. My eyes are pretty bad too. Did you have lasik or epi-lasik? My eye doctor told me that I should have something call epi-lasik. He said that my corneas are kinda thin and recommended the epi-lasik. He said that I would need to have it done on a friday and that my eyes would not clear up until monday. I don't particularly like the idea of spending the weekend without my eyesight. It's kinda' like if your eyes are bad and you lose your glasses. You definitely feel "as blind as a bat". Let me know if it was the epi-lasik. I am really considering it now. thanks, Frank

Where'd you have yours done, Stefano? I'm in Northern Virginia, too. I had a neighbor who started one of the local companies doing Lasik. He used to bug me about getting it done all the time. I noticed his wife didn't have it done either. That didn't encourage me. My eyes are not too good, but at least I can see with glasses.
What type did you have done and how much did it cost?

As far as I know, I had the regular Lasik surgery. The pre-operative assessment showed that there is enough cornea tissue for follow-up procedures if needed. Hope this helps.

The cost for me was $2,000, but I'm pretty sure that included a $500 courtesy discount since my mom works with him at Potomac Hospital. My prescription was pretty strong.

My lasik results...
I had mine done 3 or 4 years ago. Overall I'm pleased with the outcome but it's not perfect.
Before lasik I wore contact lenses. My left eye was an 8.25 diopter and the right was 5.5. The left eye was corrected for distance since it is my dominant eye and the one I aim with when shooting a gun. The right eye was corrected more for reading so I don't have to wear reading glasses. I only wear glasses when driving because it is more relaxing to have 20/20 in both eyes especially driving at night. The glasses simply correct my right eye so I can see as well as the left. I still have some halos at night in both eyes but mostly in the left one since it had the most correction. The right one has very minimal halos. My cornea thickness is borderline so I never planned to have a touchup.

I had cataract surgery and had the lenses in both eyes replaced with plastic versions. Before my cataracts went nuts I was correctable to 20/20. It's nice not having to use glasses/contacts any more, but there would have been no way I would have risked my eyes for that convenience had I not truly been going blind. Kind of like parachuting - I wouldn't do it for fun, but if the airplane was going down, I'd be out like a flash.

That's been my attitude, John. Why jump out of a perfectly good airplane? My eyes work now, albeit not as well as I would like, but they DO work. I can't imagine life without them.

Bump -- I am considering Lasik. Anyone care to follow-up on their stories? I'd love to ditch my glasses for good, but contacts do little for me (and bother my eyes anyway). Thanks!

Seriously, the best decision I've ever made. I'd highly suggest you go in for a free exam and consultation. The doctors/nurses preform many tests first to see if your a candidate for Lasik. From there they'll tell you what you can expect. After my Lasik, I ended up with better than 20/20. Over the course of 8 months my eyesight fluctuated as they healed. I now still have better than 20/20 vision and am very happy with the results. My night vision and depth perception are actually better than my original eyesight with glasses. I was really worried about those two factors but I went with the "better" laser and a lifetime insurance plan. I paid about $2,500 if I remember correctly. You can go with the $300 per eye plan however,,,, these are my eyes!!!! I want only the best. Besides whatever they remove can't be put back, at least not yet. Anyway, go in for the free consultation. Make sure you use a reputable doctor for the surgery if you go ahead with it. My doctor had like 40K surgery's under his belt. It's really quick and basically painless. A little annoying having your eyeball poked and prodded but the eye drops they put in make it practically un-noticeable. BTW, I could never put a contact lens in, that's how sensitive my eyes are. The most annoying part is when they cut your cornea off with this air powered razor blade called a microkerotome. Seriously though, more annoying than painful. Here's a video of what the surgery entails.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O4kDC4sZ5Jg This doctor is super slow though. My surgery took less than 2 minutes per eye and he had 5 nurses there to assist him as well. It was like a damn NASCAR pit crew! They just called out numbers every 10 seconds like, "39 52 18.... 39 52 18 copy."
