Why the "Nav System" in my SD is better then one in a new S-Class

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap_travel/20080806/ap_tr_ge/travel_brief_lost_convoy

I can't believe these people.

But it says something for the AAA maps I have in the glove box in my SD. no Nav System can beat a free AAA map!

I had an S500 back in 04 showing "current location" as Long Island Sound.... A far cry from Bergen County New Jersey but depending on the town and if it rained, the water may have been just as deep.

Moron's, you can't realy on GPS's for situations like that. Its like on a boat, you need a paper chart backup.

I love my Garmin, its fantastic on the road, and even lead me on its own around DC on my way to FL! On the way back up since we went around NYC to get down their, it lead us the same way around. Its pretty smart sometimes, I'm amazed at how quickly it will "catch on" to the route I want to take. Other times its a paper weight.

I love my maps. They're pretty smart all the time. I'm never amazed at how quickly I can find another route I want to take. They're never paperweights.............

I haven't had any issue with my GPS. Obviously you have to use your common sense but I way prefer it to the paper maps.

For the kind of running around town I do, finding little side streets, the GPS is worth its weight in gold.

I have used paper to find some of those little streets, totaly PITA have to pull over and everything. Sometimes you can't find them.

Just bought my first GPS yesterday

I bought my first GPS, a Garmin Nuvi, yesterday in Las Vegas, and I leave today on a 600 mile trip

I have been in Los Angeles, Santa Barbara and other places.

This for instance was my car outside the CEC (Claus Ettinger Corp.) Wheels showroom, on Santa Monica Blvd the other day, in Beverly Hills

Down near the yacht harbor in Newport Beach Friday night, some man came up to me and asked me to if he could buy my car!!

I can't believe anyone would be that stupid to rely soley on a GPS for a road trip like that and not check the terrain(sp)on a paper map or weather conditions etc. Being Jewish, we have a tendency to go around in circles anyway....

It must be because my Jewish friend has an even worse sense of direction than me. We'll be fishing at night and he will literaly point the boat in some random direction, even with a compass and GPS. I'm like ugh are we going to NY?

You know, the military relies on them quite a bit. Now, they are not perfect but do you think that there might have been operator error also involved?

Moses was a guy. He didn't want to ask for directions. However he did something important. Put women on the rag in the back.

I'm pretty sure that even with the GPS the military still uses topo maps. you can't beat a topo map. its just unbelievable at how people can't read a map these days. and expect the damn turn by turn directions to get there every where. give me a map any day I hate turn by turn directions.

The COMAND Nav in my G works perfectly fine. However the only time I will use it is on those rare occasions when I get lost in and around towns.

Back when I was a field rep my directions consited of a few notes jotted down on a post-it and the mental picture of important junctions in the directions. I also used google earth sometimes to ensure what I was looking for was actually there.
